Congratulations to the HEARDS Project!
HEARDS is an integrated program for eliminating child labor and providing informal education.
A success story from this project:
Through HEARDS intervention, 8 former child laborers gave their 10th grade Board Examinations in March 2014 and we learned that 6 of these children passed and scored above 80% in the exams. These children who grew up in extreme poverty and worked in local cigarette factories, automobile workshops or tea stalls to make a living can call themselves 10th Grade (SSE) Graduates today. They are the first graduates in their families.
Vibha's Top project Heards - Eradication of child labor one slum at a time won the 2nd prize at the SWAG awards organized by The CSR journal
In the month of June street play competition was organized by Plan- Door Step School, Mumbai with an objective to have an exposure of different community issues, awareness topics and to enhance children’s dramatic skills. 118 children participated from different geographic locations with Sahyog children. It also aimed at children’s interaction through medium of street play about their problems and concerns related to child rights. Plan- DSS has children’s group in varied locations of Mumbai from ward A to M east ward in slum communities and schools. All groups have unique characteristics from old to new, residence of village to city and inputs given through workshops or by coordinator. It included array of topics like awareness on right to education not only for children but also adult literacy, environment conservation, anti-superstition, awareness on health issues, anti-addiction, village sanitation and cleanliness drive at slums, female foeticide and gender discrimination. Most of the groups topics were influenced by the community issues faced by them and their civic conscience was appreciable as they wanted to present whole heartily to contribute in some way to eliminate the issue. Children’s performances were judged on their message, voice clarity, use of props, and knowledge of the topic, preparation and group coordination. All children were awarded with the certificates and top three street plays and performers were awarded with the trophies and medals. Interesting newer groups came up with interesting techniques like use of audios on mobiles to create effective background. The children also used rhythms and tunes of famous new movies tracks to attract audience. Apart from winning teams many groups performed excellently and were just point behind in marks. It was indeed difficult task for judges to select winners. Children were also given opportunity to share their talents in slot given and the enthusiasm of children was just astonishing. Overall experience of competition not only increased their sporting spirit and learning of issues presented but also encouraged them to continue their awareness campaigns in community using various techniques seen in the presentation.
Motivating comment from Apna Skool (a Vibha supported project) Project Lead Vaishali Pawar:
"[In my time as the] Project lead over the past year, it is truly humbling to see IT Kanpur students and community champions coming together to provide education in a fun and interesting way to the children of brick kiln workers who would otherwise be working along side their parents in these kilns. I am proud to be part of Vibha which supports this effort as we inch closer to ERADICATING child labor in India."
Projects like Door Step School is only possible through dedicated people putting in hard work. Cheers to her!
Education at every doorstep made possible by Rajani Paranjpe
This amazing lady has taken a pledge to make 100% literacy rate a reality and she is trying to achieve this with her amazing initiative called ‘Door Step School’. She goes wherever the children are and starts the class right there. She has managed to take classes at places like pavements and road construction sites, building construction sites, outside big markets, railway stations, etc. Targeting children from age 3 to 18, hers is a school on wheels where the team can teach the children even if there is no place to conduct the classes. Amazing, isn’t it? How one can bring changes without cribbing about lack of resources. I guess we all can learn a thing or two from her incredible initiative.
