in 1980, Black Entertainment Television (BET) launched. It is the first cable network created for Black American viewers. The network began as a 2-hour weekly program on the Nickelodeon television network, airing music videos and sitcoms starring Black casts.
Founder Robert L. Johnson, a lobbyist in the television industry, saw the potential for programming catered to an African American audience. The network rose to popularity with syndicated programs like "BET News", "BET Tonight", "Teen Summit," and "106 & Park".
