A big shout out to my dad who has always been very supportive of our chicken business. He always volunteers to watch the "grandchickens" when we go out of town.

🐓The Barred Plymouth Rock is one of my top 5 breeds of chicken. Here are some quick facts about the Barred Rock hen:

👉They can lay up 250 eggs a year.
👉Tend to be docile breed.
👉Lay brown eggs 🥚
👉Lifespan of 8 - 10 years
👉Great breed for beginners
👉Heat and cold hardy, but owners should be careful of frostbite with the comb in winters

🐓I'm a little biased because one of my first hens was a Barred Rock. Louise was a talker and always told us when she wasn't happy about something. I know that as chicken owners, we aren't supposed to have favorites, but Louise was definitely one of my favorites.

🐓Please don't ask me how, but Louise got trapped under a large empty flower pot one day. We were outside with the chickens and noticed Louise was missing. When one of the flower pots was "squaking," we quickly flipped it over to find that Louise was under it. She was a beautiful bird, and my camera roll is full of pictures from her.

🥶 Hate running out to the chicken coop on freezing cold mornings to make sure that your chickens have fresh water?

🐔🐔🐔 Three very lucky eight week old chicks moved into their new home at Peachtree Presbyterian today. One Buff Orpington, one Black Star, and one White Leghorn are happily adjusting to their new home.

It's going to be so much fun seeing what the kids name this new trio!

🥚 Full disclosure, this picture isn't from this year. My chickens are all still on their egg laying hiatus 🙄 which is super annoying because we had to BUY eggs last week. I posted this picture to remind myself that Spring is right around the corner and along with it (hopefully) comes more fresh eggs.

Have you ever had to do the egg purchase of shame at the grocery store?

⚠️ Too much calcium in growing chickens can reduce growth and damage developing kidneys.

Too much calcium too early can cause other irreversible health damage like visceral gout and calcium urate deposits.

Aways use a quality grower feed with your developing chickens. A grower feed will contain extra protein for growing muscles and less calcium. A grower feed should contain 1% or less calcium.

🐣 It's almost chick season! This is a great time of year to start preparing for the new arrivals. Baby chicks are adorable but they take work!

My biggest piece of advice is to have everything prepared BEFORE the chicks make it home. CityChick has all of the supplies that you'll need to raise your new baby chicks! From baby chick starter feed to the best bedding, CityChick has you covered!

🐓 It's almost that time of year that everyone starts thinking about getting chickens. If you're thinking of starting your own flock the best thing that you can do is to check those poultry keeping ordinances!

Chicken keeping ordinances can vary greatly between different counties, cities, and neighborhoods. And if you belong to a HOA, always check with them first. You could be subject to fines and penalties.

How do you find your local chicken keeping ordinances? Start by looking up your county on municode.com. If there's no information there, you can always call your local zoning official.

Every year I get hit with requests about rehoming chickens because someone didn't know their code. Please, do your research and know ahead of time!

How are the chicken keeping ordinances where you are? Are they chicken friendly like our friends in Decatur have? Or are they more strict?

If you're looking to add a wonderful breed to your flock, you really should consider the Orpington chicken. Orpingtons come in many different varieties but the most popular is the Buff Orpington which is a beautiful gold color.

Orpingtons are traditionally good egg layers and will produce around 3 - 5 brown eggs a week.

In my experience, Orpingtons love to go broody so if you're looking for a good momma hen, the Orpington is the way to go.

2022 was a roller coaster ride for many of us. The first half of the year saw crazy fuel prices. We had a few supply chain issues but thankfully nothing that slowed down our delivery business!

I'm grateful for all the amazing support from the backyard chicken community. Thank you so much for being part of our journey!

One of my favorite Christmas gifts was this beautiful glass ornament that was gifted to us from my amazing sister in law. Its a hand painted photo of one of our original hens, Louise.

Louise is no longer with us. She lived until she was 7 years old which is a nice long life for a hen. Louise was a smart, chatty hen who also somehow managed to get herself stuck in one of our large flower pots. She might not be with us anymore, but her memory lives on.

👀 Have you seen the weather for this weekend?

🥶 It's going to dip below freezing this weekend. The most important thing you can do to help your chickens is to make sure they have fresh water to wake up to!

I'll be running extension cords out to my coops today and plugging in some heated poultry drinkers. This way my chickens won't wake up to frozen water!
