WHY WATCH NIGHT SERVICE?
Historically, “Watch Night Service” in the Black Church commemorates the occasion that on the night of Dec. 31, 1862, during the Civil War, free and freed blacks living in the Union States gathered at churches, while thousands of their enslaved black sisters and brothers stood, knelt. and prayed on plantations—anticipating the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation into law.
Today, the Black Church stands in that faith tradition of our enslaved ancestors. We gather to celebrate and observe “Watch Night” through various ways that commemorate and celebrate The God of our "weary years & silent tears"...Yet the One who has brought us thus far on the way. We are the survivors of a people who were defined in the U.S. Constitution as three-fifths human, shackled in chains, and denied our basic human rights.
One hundred and sixty years (160) years after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation (January 1, 1863), Our Churches still join the faith traditions of times past so that five minutes before midnight, women, men, youth, and children will hold hands and “Pray the New Year in!”
May the Peace, Love, and Grace of our God and our Ancestors carry us into and throughout the New Year.
In Jesus' Name, I Pray.
Happy New Year
