State School Superintendent Richard Woods invites students in grades 10-12 to be part of the conversation by serving on his 2024-2025 Student Advisory Council. These students will meet with Superintendent Woods to discuss the impact of state policies in the classroom and other education-related issues. They will serve as the Superintendent's ambassadors to their respective schools. “Student Advisory Council allows students to share their feedback directly with me and other state leaders and to help shape the future of education in Georgia," Superintendent Woods said. "We want to hear from students about what’s working, what’s not, and what we can do to make our schools better places to learn. Meeting and learning about each council member are highlights of my work. Their feedback, opinions, and perspectives provide insight Georgia Department of Education leadership, staff, and I use to make the best possible policy choices." Superintendent Woods recently visited Cobb County to recognize the following schools' status as literacy leaders: Austell, Ford, Mount Bethel, Mountain View, Murdock, Riverside, Shallowford Falls, Sope Creek, Timber Ridge, and Tritt elementary schools. Superintendent Woods was greeted by a team of student leaders and led to the media center, where he awarded ten banners to the principals of the schools. Knowing the fundamental importance of early literacy and students’ ability to read proficiently by third grade, we're recognizing schools with exceptional achievement or growth in third-grade reading as 2022-2023 Literacy Leaders. Schools with 90% or more of their third-grade students reading at grade level or above are being recognized for outstanding achievement, and schools with a 15% or higher increase in that percentage from 2021-2022 to 2022-2023 are being recognized for outstanding growth.
