Disagreement (2/5)
——————-
The original context of this quote concerns the great structural anthropologists discussion of the Winnebago tribe of Canada. 'In representing 'the tribe' one group drew one circle inside another circle to indicate a group surrounding another. another group, asked the same thing, drew a line down the center of a circle to represent two groups standing side by side. 'this perfectly captures the way in which disagreement between the two groups is also a disagreement over what the terms of the disagreement are, and it also nicely illuminates the stakes of disagreement between men and women'

Here’s the original: “Why we contradict. We often contradict an opinion for no other reason than that we do not like the tone in which it is expressed.” (Nietzsche 'human all too human' : 137)
Decision (5/5)
———————-
Arthur William Radford was an admiral and naval aviator of the United States Navy. Not really a writer of note but the quotation fits snuggly within our thematic take on decision so, well, here we are.
Decision (2/5)
--------
This comes form Provocations, a compilation of Kierkegaard's spiritual writings. It's a really easy read and chock-a-block full of great insights. you can find a free copy here. https://www.tenttheology.com/site_files/7070/upload_files/Kierkegaardreadings-Provocations.pdf?dl=1. The quote here I took some liberties with. In the original it's given as "A decision is an eternal protest against fictions." I could swear I’ve seen it translated as 'destroyer'somewhere but I can't track it down. The idea here is that once we make a decision, the infinite array of possibilities that we’re previously before us (i.e. fictions) is instantaneously toppled by the one actuality produced by the decision.

Of Grammatology (70). Whatever decision one may take, it can never be wholly justified.

The original is better. Had to do some gymnastics to get it into "dictionaryish' form. Here it is: The only way to predict the future is to have power to shape the future. Eric Hoffer. Hoffer, Eric 1996. The Passionate State of Mind.
The Future (3/5)

The Future (2/5)
---------
This is a ‘false’ quotation that tends to appear here and there on the interwebs. It's not exactly true to the original, but, oddly enough, I find it is really is as good as - if not better than - the original from the preface of Human, All Too Human: “Our destiny exercises its influence over us even when, as yet, we have not learned its nature: it is our future that lays down the law to our to-day.”
The Future (1/5)

The kiss (5/5)
————-
I have this is my notes (accumulated over many years) but, trying to track down its origin, it might just be a wildly liberal paraphrasing of this line from Ulysses. "She kissed me. I was kissed. All yielding she tossed my hair. Kissed, she kissed me. Me. And me now." If anyone out there knows better, do let me know.
James Joyce.

Malcolm de Chazal is a hidden gem in the world of aphorisms. His huge collection of phenomenologically hard-hitting aphorisms, Sens-Plastique, is difficult to get hold of but out of this world. You might be able to find yourself a copy at green integer, a really excellent independent press.
The Flower (2/5)

Emerson's Essays. 2018. Ralph Waldo Emerson. The original reads “the earth laughs in flowers.”
The Flower (1/5)
---------
This little gem comes from novelist and philosopher Iris Murdoch. Murdoch's "A Fairly Honorable Defeat". People from a planet without flowers would think we must be mad with Joy the whole time to have such things about us.
