American Red Cross Blood Drive — AHC

The American Red Cross invites you to donate blood TOMORROW, August 13, at the Atlanta History Center from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. 🩸

The Red Cross supplies about 40% of the nation’s blood and blood components, all from generous volunteers. However, supply often falls short of demand, as only about 3% of eligible donors give blood each year.

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood—whether for accident recovery, cancer treatment, or childbirth. Your donation can make a critical difference.

Pictured here are Airplane Spotter Playing Cards originally issued by the U.S. military in World War II. The cards taught vital aircraft recognition skills to troops while they enjoyed a few minutes of well-deserved leisure time. Each card illustrates the silhouettes of an allied or enemy aircraft. Allied forces used the Douglas C-47 “Skytrain” extensively during World War II. It is perhaps best known for delivering paratroopers of the U.S. 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions behind enemy lines in Normandy, five hours before the coastal landings began on June 6, 1944: D-Day. In remembrance of the 80th anniversary of D-Day, we invite you to tap the link below to hear memories of Georgia veterans recorded for Atlanta History Center’s Veterans History Project. https://youtu.be/fjs-TO784_g?feature=shared

💿 With funds from the Digital Library of Georgia, Atlanta History Center has digitized 213 more recordings from the John Burrison Georgia Folklore Collection. This collection contains interviews with Southerners about folklore and daily life in the rural South in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Many of the recordings also contain music, typically bluegrass, folk, and gospel. 💿 One example is this two-part recording by Sandra Edwards of Glen Mullins and the Lester Trio (MSS-AV 1140.0395.001 and MSS-AV 1140.0395.002). Mullins starts the recording by describing how he learned banjo, specifically the clawhammer style. Then he and the Lester trio perform songs such as “There’s a Hole in the Bottom of the Sea.” 🌊 Tap the link in our bio to explore the recordings.
