This painting was out of my head, struck by the silhouette of tree branches for as long as I can remember. I’ve always been a bit scared to paint it (outside of my sketchbooks) because I feared either how much work it would take, or how fake it would look - or something. But the vision of this has been in my mind for a long time. I actually did a similar image 30 years ago in Highschool.

I was thinking of my New England upbringing, the cold end of winter, with the sun staying out later, the buds are just about to start blooming in a week or two, birds are flying around and singing more. The houses in shadow (left panel) have the glow inside, while the sun travels west.

I used real Gold paint in the base layer of this. It will come through in the right lighting.

These were painted with Gold paint in the under painting, the sky changes color based on the time of day.

I find the sky is beyond full of colors that really cannot be recreated without using multiple layers and washes of heavy paint. This piece has about 10 layers under it, starting with an base of gold paint mixed with burnt sienna. These are on 3 birch wood panels, raised about 1” off the wall, you could frame it in a floating frame.
