Happy Friday fom the #carvercollections ! Onie B. Conley. If you have ever noticed the name on the plaque by our conference room, you might have wondered about the woman behind it. Onie B. Conley lived right down the street from the Carver Museum, in a house that, since her passing in 2003, has been home to a start up, a yoga studio, and now a lash studio. But before all of these businesses, the woman who lived there dedicated 43 years of her life to her East Austin community. Born and raised in Austin, Conley was persistent in the development of our East Austin neighborhood. She served on the board of the Carver Museum and helped get the city to paint curbs, clean up vacant lots and pave streets. She advocated for the construction of two senior citizen centers in Austin, one of which is named after her. The Conley-Guerrero Senior Activity Center opened in 1989 and was the first such center in East Austin. She was a self described “Community Woman,” as she didn’t marry — her neighbors were her family. Those who knew Conley describe her as a 21st Century lady, a Renaissance woman, one who was way ahead of her time. She was also known to be very meticulous, always carrying rubbing alcohol and paper towels so that everything was clean. She spent hours at the library researching any issue she was involved in whether it was getting rocking chairs for the senior centers or new street lights. Conley was a voice for the city, and the community knew her voice well. Video: Footage of Onie B. Conley honored at the 2000 Amber Awards at the Carver Museum.
