Reinforced structure fire in station 54’s area: First arriving crews found a unoccupied mobile home 50% involved. An aggressive fire attack by engine 54 was able to keep the fire contained to one unit. No occupants were displaced by the fire. It is crucial to get the needed firefighters on scene quickly to mitigate incidents efficiently and to keep the public and firefighters safe. 📸 credit: Refugio Zuniga and Magdelana Mora-cisneros.

When it’s #FireSeason and a wildfire breaks out numerous fires stations and engines get “toned” out to hopefully contain the fire quickly. When a fire pushes beyond our limits we have to call in more resources from around the state to help and call back off duty Kern County Firefighters to fill our open stations. Your #KernCountyFirefighters are currently on the front lines of the #BenaFire which is over 3,500 acres and pushing our staffing to the limits just one day after Chief Witt told the board he would have a hard time staffing fire stations. We currently have understaffed positions at stations 11, 23, 24, 35, 41, 42, 45, 51, 52, and 54. At one point there were 100 vacancies due to short staffing and emergency activity. Erskine Fire - 4 Years Remembrance
Four years ago, Kern County was struck by the most devastating fire in its history: The #ErskineFire. This fire siege pushed the Kern County Fire Department well beyond it’s operational limits. When the call came out, our off duty firefighters left their homes and family dropping everything to come to the aid of our fellow citizens. Many didn’t wait for orders back, rather left to the closest fire station to grab what apparatus they could find left and respond to help their community in its time of need. One of your #KernCountyFirefighters on the front lines, while protecting the lives and property of the County of Kern, tragically lost his own home in the destruction of the inferno. Hundreds of homes were destroyed and 2 civilians lost their lives within the first few hours. The Kern River Valley is prone to fires like this one. The fire stations in this area are #understaffed with only 3 KCFD fire stations and a total of 9 firefighters covering the many communities of the area. To get the minimum of 15 firefighters on scene of an ordinary structure fire requires engines from #Piute, #Inyokern, or #EastBakersfield to respond taking 40+ minutes to arrive. It is difficult to fathom the work that was done during the Erskine fire under such extreme circumstances, while being limited by the amount of fire fighters on duty. We believe the tax payers deserve more from their government. This fire season has barely started and we are seeing an increase in new starts proving that this is going to be a very busy season. We want to take the time to remind the public to provide a defensible space around your property, to help us protect you. We have less firefighters today, than we did before the Erskine Fire...

#StopTheFireCuts
Homelessness in the County of Kern is a public safety crisis. #FirstResponders are seeing a heightened safety risk on the front lines. The transient population has added an increase in work for many understaffed county departments. Call volume increases are having significant impacts on an already underfunded fire department. Further taxing the resources as often times we are the first points of contact. It is time to support #PublicSafety and homeless prevention programs to address the crisis on multiple fronts. Please stand with us and let your supervisor know that they need to provide proper funding to public safety. Go to www.KernCountyFirstResponders.com to show your support! Thank you! #StopTheFireCuts #KernFirst

#KernCountyProfessionalFirefighters cutting down what is commonly referred to as a "hazard tree" or a "snag." When a wildfire runs through vegetation and trees, it often leaves trees standing that are ready to fall down at a moments notice. These trees present a significant hazard as they can and do fall with out any warning. Crews typically need to work around and under these trees to perform quality mop up and perimeter control in order to make sure the fire doesn't continue to spread. #KernCountyFirefighters #AllRiskFireDepartment #WildFire #Felling #Stihl #Jeronimo #Snag #HazardTree
