for January is to list my creative plans for 2024, and so I did, at length! Check it out and see what you think.
My creative plans for 2024 Christiane Knight published a post on Ko-fi
It wasn't much and didn't last long, but snow is always magical to me.
Christopher suggested that this could work as the cover for a David Sylvian album and he's not wrong.
I’ll be honest: while some good things came out of 2023, this year broke my heart – and tried to break my spirit – in a lot of ways. I can’t say it’s been my worst year. I have a lot of competition in that area! But the challenges and the setbacks have been … well, a lot.
However! Some fantastic things happened too, and I’m still here and so are you. These are worth celebrating! And as I’m always that optimist with a positive mental attitude, I can find more good things to list than bad, despite the challenges I faced. I’m going to share both good and bad parts with you – lets’ start off the new year with a clean slate!

Goodbye, 2023 - Christiane Knight I'll say goodbye to 2023 and welcome to 2024 with my recap of what's happened and forecast of what I've got planned for the year to come!
IT'S TIME!
Friends, if you would consider dropping votes for my books in the Indie Ink Awards 2023, I would be incredibly grateful. You were instrumental in nominating them to numerous categories, to my delight - but now is the big important vote, the one that potentially gets them to finalist status.
I'll drop the l i n k in the comments. If you could vote and share this - and check out all the other Indie nominees, there are so many great books in this! - I'd be thrilled 💜
Holy moly, y'all.
I just got an email from Indie Ink Awards 2023 and it seems that both my books got nominated in a TON of categories! I know that a lot of that was thanks to you, my friends.
When the next steps come I'll let you know. I'm up against so many great books that I can't say that I'll have a chance, but no matter what, I feel SEEN as a writer and that's the best feeling in the world. THANK YOU to everyone who nominated.
Nothing poetic to say, just letting the textures speak for me.
If you're not from Baltimore but you read Cast a Shadow of Doubt, you might have wondered if Round Falls was a real thing.
📸 Uncensored Archive: 2016
Round Falls, built in the early 1800s to power grain mills in the Jones Falls Valley, is today a hidden, urban oasis just north of 29th Street. A makeshift staircase carved into the steep hillside leads to an unstable, dilapidated and graffiti-covered observation deck.
Please vote? I'll include the link for Cast a Shadow of Doubt in the comments, it is also eligible!
In Sleep You Know, A Story of the Eleriannan - Indie Story Geek Even the grittiest blue collar city has a spark of magic under the surface; but in Baltimore, graffiti holds secret messages and artists are the spellcasters. Abandoned buildings hide ancient beings, and at the local club, you might find yourself rubbing shoulders with menacing and otherworldly crea...
My favorite tree has joined us in celebrating autumn! This is the color boost I needed today.
Good autumnal things: leaves on my favorite Kwanzan cherry tree are starting to turn, and Mom and I made a tasty apple gallette, half of which is already gone because it's delicious (and smaller than it looks)
Just a reminder from your friendly writer pal that if you've read my books and haven't left a review, today's always a great day to do so! If you can't on Amazon, Goodreads is an excellent place for dropping your opinion. You don't even have to write words about it, even a star rating is helpful.
This goes for everyone you've been reading, but indie authors really need that help, because it gets us a little more clout for people who don't know us and aren't sure if they should take a chance.
Thank you so much 💜
When the world is heartbreaking and heavy, and I feel helpless, I focus on something small and beautiful.
These were my reward to myself for navigating being a human this week. I wanted to share them with you.
Borrowing The Creative Act: a Way of Being by Rick Rubin from the library (shout-out to BCPL, they're the best!) and I'm looking forward to getting some creative inspiration. A quick flip though the book looks promising.
I often read books about the creative act and how we approach it and nurture it. As this is the basis of everything I do in life, it makes sense to me to take advice from other creative folk who have done well with their vision and work.
Here's my intro to the new podcast [I've got chapter reads from In Sleep You Know coming, too!]
Some background info:
Magic All Around brings all the pieces of me - DJ and music lover, artist, and writer - together in a podcast. Episodes will feature discussions about where I find inspiration in music, art, crafting, and writing, and how all those aspects blend together to convey the mystery of what I call Magic Seeking. I'll also be talking about updates and giving excerpts from what I'm writing and working on, as well as news about other writers, artists, and musicians - especially indies - all in a casual and fun style! I focus on hopepunk, classic & contemporary SFF, post-punk, fae and mythology, & more.

A thing I've been asked for and have been kicking around for a while is a feature where I do serial readings from my books. The possibilities are as endless as being a broke artist will allow: that is, I've considered recording audio, or giving you my goofy face while I read.
So why not ask y'all, I thought, and that brings me to this poll:
Have your say: Would you like me to read my books aloud to you? Voice your opinion on the poll: Would you like me to read my books aloud to you?
f you're not on my author mailing list, you might not have seen that there's a big sale from fantasy, sci-fi, and horror indie authors happening this weekend, August 26 - 28. I know a lot of y'all read in those genres! You can get ebooks from lots of SPFBO authors as well as some of the most talked about books of this year. I almost never do sales but you can pick up the ebook of In Sleep You Know, too!

Becoming an author is an exercise in hope.
You write the words, and craft the story, trusting that it will be good enough to share with the world. You have to believe so strongly that your writing is Good Enough, Relevant Enough, Meaningful Enough. You give your time and energy and sleep and dreams to this work. Oh, and don’t forget your money, so much money is needed to create the book, and get it in front of potential readers. Editing, layout, cover art, advertising, and all the other little details.
It’s a wonder that any books get written at all.

I was lucky enough to do a long, fun interview on Melinda Kucsera's podcast, where we talked about my book In Sleep You Know, which is a contender in SPFBO [Self Published Fantasy Blog Off].
We chatted about the story and I did a reading excerpt that you might not have heard yet, then we talked about topics as widely ranging as graffiti magic, character motivations, and adding music to a story as a way to heighten the experience. It was a lot of fun and I haven't laughed that much in a while!

"Rather than focusing on evil as a motivator for a storyline, I’d rather explore the traumas and misunderstandings that lead people to the choices they’ve made. I talk about broken and dysfunctional families, social pressure, being without a house or a community, feeling inadequate and powerless – and how all these things shape how we move in the world. The magic parts of my stories are more than just the powers that the Fae bring. They’re all entwined in the decisions that the characters make."
Good vs. Evil? Nah. - Christiane Knight I don't write the kind of fantasy that has obviously evil villains. They have dark moments, and people who do bad things, but the overall atmosphere is hopeful.

Nothing Happened, the End. - Christiane Knight So what happened is this: I went to Balticon. But my body? It didn't like that much, I guess.
