Born in Central Bridge, New York, in 1846, George Westinghouse went on to become an integral part in increasing the safety of American railroading. From an early age, Westinghouse was exposed to machinery in his father's shops. In 1869, Westinghouse invented and patented a compressed-air brake system to replace the standard manual braking system and went on to incorporate the Westinghouse Air Brake Company. The 1893 Railroad Safety Appliance Act made air brakes like Westinghouse's compulsory on all trains, and by the end of his career, the inventor had made over 300 inventions that revolved around railroad travel. The Rail Ops Team keeps us in motion! Audio: Wonder how the B&O keeps its tracks functioning? It’s thanks to our Rail Ops team! Currently, Rail Ops is working on replacing the worn out rail with relay rail, which is still used, but in much better condition. First that means replacing single shoulder plates with double shoulder plates, then double spiking them with the hydraulic spiker. Once they’re in place, you can see the shiny new spikes! A fun thing to note is that the relay rails are marked with dates that say when they were made and by whom. During the event, there was a controlled collision between a locomotive and an automobile and the extrication process used to help save lives when such incidents occur. Until next year!

As we wrap up our month-long celebration of the 70 years of the B&O Railroad Museum, it is important that we remember the B&O Railroad. Centered in the iconic roundhouse and adjacent annex, it was a small corner of the sprawling and still-working Mt. Clare shops in West Baltimore. Later, after the B&O Railroad ended most operations in those shops, conversations about the transfer of the property to an independent, nonprofit body began. On November 11, 1987, those talks led the Board of CSX Transportation (successor to the B&O Railroad) to authorize and implement that transfer. Despite this separation, the Museum continues to have a close relationship with CSX. In May 2023, CSX debuted its inaugural heritage locomotive, CSX No. 1827, featuring the B&O colors. And on June 8th, 2023, CSX pledged $5 million towards the Museum’s newly launched campaign to restore and update the South Car Works in anticipation of the B&O Railroad’s bicentennial in 2027.

First Responders Showcase is an all-day event to educate and learn about the work that emergency personnel do. Today is Juneteenth – a commemoration of the emancipation of African Americans and the end of slavery in the United States. We had the honor of being featured by 400 Years of African American History Commission in an episode of History Matters, highlighting sites that played important roles for Freedom Seekers. The Museum's historic Mt. Clare Station was named a National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Site in 2021 and was the exact location through which eight Freedom Seekers, including Henry “Box” Brown and William and Ellen Craft, traveled.
