The first episode I dive into some definitions of terms and look at the major differences between polytheism and monotheism, and set the stage for the future of the podcast.

This evening, I finished writing Episode 2: What is a god!

Whew! It took a while to get all my thoughts in order. The last few paragraphs were drafted listening to Beastie Boys “Intergalactic,” so they may be a bit spicy. I don’t know.

It’s been quite a campaign and the finish line is in sight! The North American Animal Wisdom Oracle Kickstarter campaign ends tomorrow, May 6, at 8:45am ET.

I want to thank you all for your continued support and cheerleading. You have buoyed my spirits through this month.
I have one last ask of you all, and that is to share with your friends in real life or via social media one last time today about this campaign. We only need about 10 folks to either pledge at the ”deck only” level or to add a deck to their pledge to bump up to the stretch goal for 3 additional cards in the deck. I would really love for that to happen.

One of the hardest things to do when creating this deck was deciding which animals to include. 72 cards seems like a lot until you start to dive into how rich the diversity of animal life in North America really is. There are so many different types of habitats and ecosystems — and types of animals: mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians, invertebrates, and insects. And they are all so vital to the healthy functioning of the living world.

If you have been putting it off, now is the time. There are just 2 more days for you to get in on the North American Animal Wisdom Oracle’s Kickstarter campaign.

Rewards include the deck of 72 cards, 5”x7” prints, a live reading using the cards, and a custom animal portrait. You can also add on a workbook with information about each animal spirit along with room to journal about your encounters with them.

Brown Bear (Ursus arctos): Brown bear is one of the largest living land carnivores. They usually live alone and are not highly territorial, except in mating season or if food sources are tight. They tend to avoid areas of human habitation unless drawn in by easy-to-get meals near their home ranges.

Message: You just want to be left alone to live your life. Go out into the wilds and use all your sense to really observe everything around you. You are a part of this world.

Common Raven (Corvus corax)

There is nothing common about the common raven, except that it is found throughout the northern parts of North America and Eurasia. Intelligent, crafty birds, ravens have been observed using tools to defend their territory and to get food. Ravens will hunt cooperatively and will follow a predator's tracks or the sounds of a shotgun to scavenge another's kill.

When you are facing a tricky situation, perhaps something that seems impossible, look for something you can use in an innovative way. Some trick or intricacy will be needed to solve the puzzle in front of you.

Raven is just one of 72 animals from Canada, Mexico, and the United States featured in the North American Animal Wisdom Oracle.

The North American Animal Wisdom Oracle is fully funded!!!! I am still mentally spinning and holding a heart so full of gratitude for all the support of my community.

At the urging of some of my more vociferous supporters, I have added some stretch goals and rewards to push us all even further.

If we reach the following stretch goals, the deck will expand as follows:

The North American Animal Wisdom Oracle is both a spirit-led art project and a community building project in my eyes.

The art is plain to see and will have a physical reality in the deck of 72 cards featuring images of wild animals living in Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

The community building project lies in the effort to build a body of knowledge through establishing and nurturing relationships with the animal spirits represented in the deck.

How’s that you ask? Rather than appropriating and misinterpreting “meanings” from Indigenous cultures or the folklore from other cultures, we will be directly interacting with the animal spirits and sharing with each other the messages they give us. I will sort through these messages looking for themes and bringing them back to the spirits for confirmation. In this way we develop a lexicon and body of knowledge through direct experience in community.

We have lift-off! The Kickstarter campaign for the North American Animal Wisdom Oracle launched this morning!

This oracle deck contains 72 cards featuring wild animals from Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

The main reward for supporting the campaign is a copy of the deck, but there are some higher-level rewards with prints, a private reading, a custom animal portrait, and a facilitated workshop.

One of the challenging parts of designing this oracle deck was deciding on which animals to include — or really which ones to not include. Instead of all the usual suspects, I wanted to give some love to some less familiar animals. I also wanted to diversify from charismatic mammals and birds, so you will find some invertebrates like earthworm and Nudibranch, as well as some fish and insects.

There are three animal spirits who are “sponsoring” this artistic and interpretive project — Raven, Brown Bear, and Octopus — one for each suit (Sky, Land, and Water).

This project is not just an oracle deck, but a community interpretive project as well. Instead of appropriating spiritual messages, oracular meanings, and/or divinatory interpretations from Indigenous or other cultures, and instead of offering just my own meanings — I want to engage a community of contemporary spirit workers in working with the animal spirits and this deck directly to create a body of knowledge from the spirits themselves. That’s one of the “awards” of many of the Kickstarter levels — participation in an online community that can both add to and benefit from this exploratory work. Together, as community, we will be asking questions of the spirits and bringing back their messages to share. Eventually, this knowledge will be compiled, reviewed, and distributed in even wider circles.

Pssst! I decided to launch a Kickstarter for the North American Animal Wisdom Oracle.

You know, the one I was going to launch in March 2020 and then COVID happened?

So, yeah, I'll be posting a lot about it over the month and a half. The Kickstarter launches April 6 and there will be an early supporter level during the length of the Between The Worlds Conference / Sacred Space Conference 2023!
