Rachel shares her story as a Hyde School survivor with On the Emmis podcast
From On The Emmis Podcast: What do cold food, forced exercise, and being blindfolded and walked into the woods in a blizzard have in common? They're all used as forms of punishment at the Hyde School in Bath, Maine! This week's guest is a survivor of the Hyde School's Woodstock campus that has since been shut down. But before you high five us, they are still operating in other parts of New England and are owned and managed by the same people (mainly the Gauld family). Who thought that was a good idea? This is exactly why the #ACCA is so important. Grab a glass of your fave beverage and listen to this New Year's Eve episode with Rachel. She has a horrifying yet all too common story to tell you all about her four years at Hyde School. Underqualified Staff work at TTI facilities
Like Elan School, most, if not all, Hyde School staff for 55 years had no formal training in psychology or counseling, and none have been licensed mental health care professionals, short of an occasional social worker they’ve sometimes had on staff during the past 10-15 years. Many were simply graduates of Hyde, with maybe some college. Some had a general undergraduate degree. Most teachers were/are not credentialed to teach. #breakingcodesilence #hydeschool #elanschool

Feel positively about your experience at a TTI facility?
If you don’t feel negatively about #hydeschool or any other #troubledteenindustry program, then we accept your feelings. But please don’t make it harder for others who are coming to terms with abuse they endured during their experiences. And please don’t make comments that put current and future kids at risk by dismissing the experiences of past TTI kids. This is Lighthouse Christian Academy survivor and #BreakingCodeSilence activist Hannah.

Do all TTI staff have bad intentions?
Lighthouse Christian Academy survivor Hannah talks about the probable intentions of most faculty at #troubledteenindustry programs. Stickers and satirical emojis added by #Hydeschool survivors. #iseeyousurvivor

Validation of trauma is vital to survivor recovery
Listening to and validating others’ stories with empathy is vital to their healing journey. Like Christian fundamentalism survivor Lissa Jo Stewart says, not everything is about you. Just because you didn’t experience something oppressive and abusive, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen to countless others. It’s not okay to invalidate their experiences just because you didn’t experience it (or are brainwashed to deny, justify, minimize, or spin it). Invalidation is cruel and does further damage to those trying to recover from trauma. Some traumas don’t come with “receipts”; they just require you believe the stories of survivors. #BreakingCodeSilence #troubledteenindustry #exfundie

Forced Extreme Exercise at Hyde School
This is an example of a forced workout at #HydeSchool. These were usually made up by Hyde faculty; in this case led by a hardcore military-type athletic “trainer”-type man Hyde says they brought in for one day. Generally, according to accounts from many survivors, everyone assigned must participate in these workouts or face consequences, such as being sent to the wilderness or being put on 2-4/work crew. There were usually no medical staff present if someone got injured (except a “school nurse” who handed out meds), and many injuries have gone ignored and untreated, and kids have often been told to “suck it up”, or “you’re faking”, or “stop making excuses”, if they complained about having to participate in the mandatory 2-3 hours of sports per day while injured. This is a medium-difficulty workout, considering no one is crying or vomiting, as many report often happened. Filmed and posted online by a faculty member. #breakingcodesilence #Hydetough #weareHyde

Rachel survived years of abuse at Hyde School, and luckily found fulfillment and success in spite of it. Thank you for having the courage to share in spite of intense victim blaming and indoctrinated peer pressure that is the core of Hyde, Rachel! We see you, survivor! Reviews of Hyde School, SRA & other TTI facilities
Troubled teen industry facilities often will ask former attendees who they know will write positive reviews to write them on popular review sites, partially to try to discredit the negative reviews. Often brainwashing imposed at a TTI facility can wear off over time and what one felt about the experience can change drastically a month, a year, or 20 years after leaving, as indoctrination wears off. #hydeschool #troubledteenindustry #iseeyousurvivor

From a Hyde School Fornits message post several years ago: "They should definitely be more careful about student injuries; last year Lino Cowdrey got frostbite on outpost. He complained that he was in pain, but again he was basically ignored until they were done. He came back with black fingers, and couldn't use a pencil. He was basically in-and-out of class for a month or so. They didn't push him too hard or make him lose credit for schoolwork, as it wasn't his fault." "Lino suffered frostbite during a Hyde Schools-run wilderness excursion [aka Outpost]. I saw his fingers had turned purple and black, and his hands were put into these casts. Luckily he did not lose any fingers, but he came far too close for comfort. I do not know if he suffered any permanent damage or not." There are numerous allegations of temporary and permanent injuries caused by Hyde School's Outposts, 5:30's, 2-4's, and excessively painful/straining "workouts", being made to stand/exercise/sit/sleep in freezing snowy/icy conditions. #HydeSchool #iseeyousurvivor #childabuse #wearehyde
