Tldr: mermaiding is hard but I love it, who's having a pool party this weekend?
I'm finally watching Merpeople on Netflix. I'm only 20 minutes in and I'm already highly approving of it.
Yes, mermaiding is magic. It's also a lot of hard work (stinging eyes, flooded sinuses, cold water, physically intense activity, etc.) a lot of investment for gear, (fabric tails run $100 to $800, silicone starts at around $1200, not to mention monofins, mermaid tops, tiaras, wigs and other accessories) years of learning, (everything from breathing techniques to posing to free diving) and it's not particularly lucrative.
So why do I keep doing it?
The same reason most mermaids do, because we love it. I love seeing the delighted faces of children (and adults!), sharing that magic with others, and creating a positive experience in a negative world.
I've recently had the pleasure of working at an aquarium and it is a wonderful experience. Being able to hang out with all the sea creatures and learn more about them has been amazing. (P.S. if you ask me about stingrays I will go on at length and give you way more information than you ever thought you wanted 😅)
So I'm going to do my best to keep spreading the magic to as many people as I can.
And on that note...
