BTA NEWS – A cooler than usual afternoon, in the lower 80s, The Hammer teamed up with Team Sharon to take on Team JJ (John and Jaina) Monday at North Park. There were plenty of autograph hounds and tennis wannabes out, but The Hammer kept focused and delighted the onlookers with his usual spectacular display of speed and agility. Team Sharon also drew her usual share of attention while she kept up with The Hammer and played hard to crush Team JJ. There were a few who doubted the grandparents of eleven grandchildren could really stand up against the virtually unknown youngsters. All doubts were put away once the veteran weekend warriors hammered the youngsters in the first set with a 6 – 3 victory that included not one but two skunk games against Team JJ. The Hammer’s hot and saucy serves were simply too hot to handle. Team JJ attempted a few rallies at the net, but they simply were no match for The Hammer and Team Sharon and their coordinated efforts to return almost everything that came their way. Jaina tried hard to hold back the run away train combination of The Hammer and Team Sharon, but John interfered with and intercepted much of what had been directed at her, usually ending in a loss of points. The second set put the veteran North Park champions even farther ahead ending the set and the match, that included another skunk game, with a 6 – 2 victory. Team JJ showed a lot of courage to step up and challenge The Hammer and Team Sharon, but in the end it takes more than just courage to successfully take on the two legendary grandparents. One of the fans asked The Hammer what it was like to play doubles again, and he quickly replied “I’m ready to get back to singles, so I can beat my wife and have some real fun.”

BTA NEWS – After a lengthy absence from the courts, The Hammer and Team Sharon battled it out Sunday evening at North Park. Both players took a little longer to warm up, but once the game was on, it was The Hammer who applied all the pressure. In usual fashion The Hammer dominated the night; Team Sharon simply couldn’t keep up. Also in usual fashion The Hammer ended it all with a 6 – 2 win. When asked about how he thought he performed after such a long time away, The Hammer just laughed it off and said, “It’s been a long time coming, but it felt good to beat my wife again.”

BTA NEWS – While other dads were at home being pampered by their children and wives, The Hammer was hard at work on this annual Father’s Day Smash Up at North Park. Team Sharon came on strong in the beginning, but as usual she just couldn’t keep it up against the champ. Once The Hammer warmed up and moved to “game on,” his hot sauce serves shut down any hopes Team Sharon dreamed of. Three young fans sat glued to the bench as they tried to keep their eyes on The Hammer’s serves. After a 3 to 3 tie, The Hammer pounded the rest of the evening to his advantage, nailing Team Sharon once again, 6 to 3.
