Walking is one of the things that is definitely on my list of things to do to stay active. When I get asked about what exercise is the best for hormone health, my answer is “Anything that brings you joy and keeps you active”. When your body is under stress causing havoc with your hormones, the last thing you want to do is do any strenuous workouts like HIIT. This is not to say that all HIIT workouts are bad. It’s about the timing. Once your body starts to heal and you start to see a change in your energy, mood, weight etc. then you can incorporate HIIT workouts, but for short periods-no more than 15 minutes. 💥AUTOIMMUNITY If your stress levels are always at high levels, then it will affect your body's immune system barriers residing in your gut and brain. This will lead to many of the autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto's, Rheumatoid arthritis etc. 💥HORMONE IMBALANCES Chronic stress can also lead to cortisol overload on the liver, which decreases the liver's ability to properly filter and detox excess estrogen. So when you have too much estrogen in your bloodstream, it also increases the thyroid binding globulin(TBG). TBG is the protein that is used to carry the thyroid hormone--too much of TBG means more thyroid hormones bonded with it and not enough thyroid hormones available for the body to use for energy. 💥UNSTABLE BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS Unstable blood sugar(high or low) can impact the way our gut health. It creates hormonal imbalances, it aids to liver impairment, stresses out your adrenals and creates an overall weakened metabolic function. So when it comes to fixing your thyroid issues, nothing will work unless you also get your blood sugar levels regulated. 💥DECREASED THYROID HORMONE CONVERSION & USE In order for your body to use the thyroid hormones, they have to be converted into the active form. Chronic inflammation will cause the liver to not be able to convert the inactive thyroid hormones to active form. Liver is responsible to convert about 60% of the inactive thyroid hormones so that your body can use it for all of the metabolic functions. 💥Due to chronic stress there's also increased inflammation in your body. This means that the receptors that are waiting to bind with the active thyroid hormones are now binding with the inflammation. 💥HPA AXIS DISRUPTION In a nutshell, in order for the thyroid to function optimally, the communication between the Hypothalamus to Pituitary gland to Adrenal gland to Thyroid gland have to be intact. Any stress(acute or chronic) creates a disruption in this communication, hence the thyroid function s

Wellness Wednesday with Dr. Keta: Walking in Nature! 🌱 A new study found that a one-hour walk in nature decreased activity in a part of the brain called the amygdala, which translates to a better ability to deal with stress. Here are more nuggets of knowledge associated with this study: ✔️ Living in a city or urban area is associated with more anxiety and depression. ✔️ Studies also show that a stress-related area of the brain called the amygdala becomes more active during a stressful situation in urban residents than in rural residents. ✔️ This latest study is the first to compare what happens to brain activity during a one-hour walk on a busy city street and during a one-hour walk in the forest. The results are in and this is what was found: 🧠 Brain activation was measured in 63 healthy adults when exposed to a stressful task.🥾 Participants then went on a one-hour walk either on a busy street or in nature. 🧠 The same brain activation test was done again after the walk. 🥾 Results showed decreased activation of the amygdala in participants who had walked in nature, but no change in those who walked in the city, when exposed to stress. Here’s what it means to you:Walking in nature provides even more benefits than walking in the city. It's Wellness Wednesday with Dr. Keta time! This week we're focusing on the many benefits of having a daily gratitude practice. Daily reflection through journaling is one way to practice daily gratitude. Gratitude journaling can really transform how you view and live life. This practice allows you to focus on the good that you have in your life and find joy in the little things, too. Working on your gratitude practice does not have to be hard. Start out simple- the way Dr. Keta began her gratitude practice with her children. Here's Dr. Keta's simple approach: She had her children start saying 3 things daily that they were grateful for during our morning commute. Then one day her son saw the journal that she was writing in and showed interest in writing their gratitude also. They used the same concept. Write down at least 3 things that you are grateful for. Something as simple as "I am grateful for the street signs" wrote my younger one and "I am grateful for legos" wrote my older one.Use the same concept: write down 1,2, or 3 things that you are thankful for. OR write down everything that comes to your mind that day that you are grateful for. OR write down things that make you happy or things that you love about yourself.
