Around this time of the year, you may notice webbing appear on the ends of branches of plants like pecans, persimmons, crape myrtles, bald cypresses, and even blueberries.
The webs are made by caterpillars of the fall webworm moth. The caterpillars feed on tree leaves in a communal web. This web helps to protect them from predatory spiders and birds. The web also makes chemical control with insecticides more difficult.
For homeowners, often, doing nothing is the most practical approach to dealing with fall webworms. Fortunately, although the webs and damage are unsightly, it is seldom detrimental to the tree. Healthy, mature trees can even withstand complete defoliation.
There are insecticides that will target the fall webworms, but it’s often difficult for people to spray effectively for them.
When fall webworm webs are low enough to reach with loppers or a pole pruner, and only one or a few limbs are affected, one option is to just cut out the webbed limbs. Another option is to break up the webs, so that natural predators like birds can get to the caterpillars more easily.

Because of potential freezes, citrus can be produced in only a limited area of our state. Louisiana can be divided into three general climatic zones. Only two of these zones are suitable for citrus production.
Zone I, the coastal area, is the primary area of commercial citrus production. Generally, all citrus types can be grown in this zone.
Zone II is a marginal area where only the cold-hardy satsuma and kumquats should be grown. Certainly any plantings of citrus in Zone II should be undertaken only after realizing the risk of freeze-outs. Success with citrus planted in Zone II can be enhanced with the use of trifoliata rootstocks and cold-protection practices.
Citrus in Zone III would freeze-out regularly. Homeowners may risk planting satsumas and kumquats in Zone III. Citrus in Zone III should be grafted on a trifoliata rootstock and be protected in winter.
The best time to plant blueberry bushes in Louisiana is in fall or winter because it gives the plants an opportunity to become established before the summer heat.
The blueberry’s native adaptation to both the soil and the climate of the southeast makes it a productive fruit for Louisiana. Learn how to grow blueberries with the LSU AgCenter Home Blueberry Production Guide: https://tinyurl.com/HomeBlueberryProductionLA
