Had an amazing first quarter at SharpGroup, Agents BHHS - Professional Realty with over $12M sold! Thanks to all our friends and clients that helped make our success possible!
I left the house this afternoon with full intentions to accomplish my goal of finding a new dishwasher. Fortunately that plan was derailed as soon as I pulled into the Lowe’s parking lot and smelled Big Ed’s Barbeque.
Ed is normally parked on the corner of Stanley and Webster, but today he was at the Lowe’s on Salem. He says that he’s been selling chicken, ribs, pork chops and brisket for over 16 years and it shows. Ed is a true professional and master of his craft.
I got the chicken and rib dinner complete with beans and greens. I couldn’t believe the mountain of food that was shoved into my styrofoam dish. I tried several times but it could not be closed. Pumped to get this one home, I had no time for further dishwasher investigations. Today is Labor Day after all and the BBQ that comes with it is a tradition I respect.
Super meaty, perfect char and perfect smoke on the ribs. The bbq sauce is just the right amount of sweet and tang, you get smoke from the sauce too. The chicken was smoke flavored but still moist and delicious. Tough to do with a bird IMO. Legs and thighs are my jam but I’m a snob about chicken and this chicken exceeded my standards. Man, for not having pork, the beans and greens were both really good too.
This experience just makes me wonder how many more of Dayton’s hidden gems I’m missing. If you know of a place that you think is deserving but isn’t necessarily on the map for foodies, tag them in the comments. I’d love to explore more places like this and meet more new friends like Ed.
I know I usually review places after the fact, but I caught this show last year and let me tell you, it’s going to be AMAZING!!! Hope to see you all at Yellow Cab Tavern this weekend!
P.S.
Yellow Cab is known for not only being a local business but also being hyper focused on supporting local. They are always looking for ways to lift our community up so let’s make sure we get in and support them!
Made some big moves recently that I’ll share with you later, but in the meantime I just want to congratulate some buyers and sellers I had the pleasure of working with over the past week! Found the right one for three different buyers and got one done for a seller too! Call me to make sure you get the most out of your next real estate transaction! 937.510.3649
Congratulations to a couple of my happy sellers on getting to closing this month! Thanks again for trusting me to get the job done!
I had the opportunity to drop by and check on my friends at Devil Wind Brewing last night and it was poppin! Music and the smell of Pa’s pork filled the air on a perfect Saturday night in Xenia.
It’s no secret that Devil Wind makes some of the best beer in the area. They have made easy drinking classic styles their niche in a market saturated with haze bombs, decadent stouts and IPA’s under 100 calories. All my respect goes out to their head brewer Doug Lane for his passion to create a great product, but when you work at a small brewery like Devil Wind, you’re not just the head brewer. He’s also their sales, distribution and event promo guy. And you won’t meet a better person in the industry, so hats off to him and the rest of the team!
I started with one of my favorites, their ESB (which they just started canning on their new canning line)! Devil Wind is one of the only breweries in the area that does an ESB (I think hairless hair does one too) and while the name English Style Bitter implies a flavor that will make you picker, it’s everything but that. Malty sweetness balanced perfectly with the hops to create a very sessionable beer.
Next up was the Buccaneer lager. A lager is my favorite beer to judge a brewery on because there is no hiding with a lager. It’s either crisp, clean and refreshing or it’s not. No surprise that this one was perfect. Great job DW!
I would have been sad if I didn’t get to try the dunkel so I decided to indulge. Chocolate on the nose, then graham cracker and caramel in the mouth. This is a quintessential dunkel. Exactly what I was looking for.
I know some people would feel like I didn’t review the brewery if I didn’t have an ipa, so I grabbed one for those folks. The Hudson River New England had that typical NE yeast smell and then you catch the floral, and tropical notes of the Amarillo hops. They nailed the New England.
I finished up with my version of a dessert beer, the Sest Mil Dark Czech Lager. Think toffee, dates, malt and chocolate but still light and refreshing. It was the perfect night cap.
This is the kind of brewery where the owner rang up my drinks all night. He takes pride in his establishment and makes sure that you have a good time. It’s places like this that make the Dayton brewing scene so special, so if you have a chance to pop in and support, don’t miss the opportunity. Cheers, Dayton!
It’s had a lot of buzz lately downtown so maybe you’ve heard about the new spot, 1elevenflavorhouse… but have you tried it? It has been described at comfort meets Caribbean cuisine, but Dayton has never had a restaurant claim that vibe, so your guy had to go check it out and see what it’s all about.
Things certainly started off right. Immediately when I walked in the door I was greeted by one of the owners, a gentleman named Demetrius. Demetrius thanked us for coming in and offered to help us find a seat, but I saw one of Dayton’s best behind the bar, Nic Hunt, so I decided to grab a stool instead.
Nic explained the menu to me and hit me with some of the highlights. Think soul food meets Caribbean with drinks to boot. I asked him what I needed to try and he steered me towards the spicy garlic wings and the oxtail. My wife went with the chicken sandwich and we never looked back.
Let me start by saying all chicken wings are not created equally. Preferences to me are a large, crispy, juicy wing with little to no breading, not over cooked and certainly not under cooked. And don’t short me on my sauce, or I will politely ask for more. If you like something different than what I described, maybe these wings aren’t for you, but if you’re like me, these wings were absolutely perfect.
Next, the oxtail. You can’t fake pulled oxtail. This is a long, low and slow cook that pays off with all the flavors. A generous portion piled high on top of a bed of Caribbean rice and black beans had my palate dancing to the island beats.
I was getting full but the job wasn’t done. I still needed to try my wife’s chicken sandwich and fries for the full experience. Don’t worry guys, I’m no quitter, so I snatched a few bites. Unlike my wings, I do want a nice amount of breading on a fried chicken sandwich and they didn’t short me. The perfectly done breast, toasted bun, the Carolina sauce, and the pickles made this a quintessential chicken sandwich.
After we had cleaned our plates, Demetrius checked in on us again to make sure we had a great experience. Although I had zero complaints, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate him asking. When an owner is working hard to make sure all customers are satisfied, this is the mark of a restaurant that is going to succeed. If you have an opportunity to check it out, I definitely recommend you get in and support our new friends at 1Eleven Flavor House.
I felt very fortunate to be able to volunteer yesterday at the annual Pat Rupp Memorial Tournament and hang out with some good buddies too. Catholic Social Services of the Miami Valley is a local organization that helps combat the problems our neighbors face every day: poverty, hunger, addiction, family violence, unemployment, long term tornado recovery, refugee resettlement, and too many others to list.
I had a showing downtown cancel on me today so I figured I would take the opportunity to try something new. I had heard great things about Charlie’s Deli, but I needed to find out for myself.
Just pulling up you can already tell from the outside that this place is going to carry the nostalgia of a deli back in the 60’s, when service and quality were paramount with convenience being an afterthought. Upon walking in I was greeted by a super friendly guy named Aiden. I could tell just by talking to him how much pride he took in his work and what a great experience I was going to have.
As you may or may not know, this week is burger week in Dayton so I figured I’d give their special burger a shot. This was a hand pattied 1/2 lb of real American beef. Plenty of bacon, cheese, carmelized onion and some type of jam made this one a bit too much for me to handle, but the quality was great.
Next up Aiden told me I couldn’t leave without trying Smokey the Bear. Lebanese bologna and a pretzel roll was all I needed to hear to be sold on this sandwich for under $5. Smoked turkey, a Smokey cheese, jalapeños and a chipotle ranch brought this one together quite nicely.
After that Aiden started arguing with another employee who was telling me The Cowboy was even better. I respected her opinion so I did the only thing I saw as an option at that point and ordered a third sandwich. I will say The Cowboy did not disappoint. Turkey, hot pepper cheese, tomatoes, ranch, bbq sauce, bacon onion and jalapeños all on top of a nice Kaiser roll. Another great decision.
One thing that I will definitely be back for is Charlie’s version of a Cuban, the Tampa. Apparently, last week they started getting in this new bread shipped from Florida. The owner is keeping close wraps on where he sources it but it’s a softer, more airy and easy to smash bread that comes in 36” pieces. They will still offer the bread they have always carried from Evans Bakery as well.
Cheers to the team at Charlie’s for providing an awesome experience. I definitely recommend you check it out.
