Having some fun with the wildlife in Costa Rica

Headed back to the dreary NW from over two months here in Costa Rica. I'll post some pics soon, but man, what a great time. We're starting to feel like Playa del Coco is home.... not Portland, OR.
HiTek Scuba - Tec Diving - Scepter Squamish - BC Canada
So we just finished a great technical diving expedition to the great white north. Completed a 180fsw trimix dive on the wreck of the Scepter Squamish near Comox British Columbia. Check out the short 7 minute youtube video of the wreck dive. We also dove the S.S. Capilano, we'll be putting that video out soon.

Every year HiTek Scuba travels to Costa Rica, here are some pics. As you will see it's not JUST the great diving.
Deep Diving
Time to get off the couch. HiTek Scuba will be heading out this weekend to conduct a Deep Diving Specialty, and a Nitrox Specialty Course. Tides look exceptional on Saturday, about a 3 foot exchange between 10am and 3pm. Who knows about rain...but this is the PNW...so who cares about rain anyway!

HiTek Scuba Heads North for a Canadian HiTek Trekk! From 8/18 - 8/22 a group of hardy souls including some of our technical divers will be heading to Porpoise Bay in beautiful British Columbia. The plan consists of world class diving including Skookumchuck Narrows, HMCS Chaudière, and Agamemnon Channel. The group is then going to spend a day helping to prep the HMCS Annapolis for it's sinking later this year. Sweet!
It's time for Open Water Weekend! Our open water students will be heading out this weekend for their certification dives. Now will be their chance to put to practice all of their hard work they did in the pool to the real environments of the PNW. Visibility in the Puget Sound has been decent over the last week so hopefully it will stay that way for the weekend cert. dives. Good luck guys, we know you'll do well!
Class Reminder: The next batch of Open Water Divers gets started tomorrow Saturday July 24th at 4pm. Study up and watch your video, it's going to be an exiting day of class and pool time. New equipment ot play with, and breathing underwater for the first time...yeeha!
HiTek Scuba Open Water Diver Course Specifics
It's that time again. The class orientation for our next Open water Diver Program is scheduled for next Friday, July 9th, at 7:30pm. This will be for the July/August class. Anyone interested in his/her OW diver Certification (or if you know someone that's always wanted to do it but hasn't "stepped up" yet) give us a call and reserve your spot. Classes are small (8 or less) and we don't do that many. There is no cost to attend the orientation. Follow the link to see more.

Tec Divers from the HiTek Team are going to the Tacoma Dive Expo this weekend. We're going to see if we can "clean up" at the annual treasure hunt this year. The extended bottom times that tec divers are capable of might give us a real advantage to collect the treasures and win some prizes on Sunday.
Newly Certified Divers are here!! Congrats to David Hunter, Vaughn Hunter, Steve Horn, Tori Green, and Paul Endres for earning their "cold water" PADI Open Water Diver Certification, and congrats to Josie Jimenez for earning her "cold water" Scuba Diver certification. It was a tough weekend with super low visibility in the training zone, but they got through it, and are already planning their next diving adventures.
Be AWARE of the algae layer! In Hood Canal this weekend our classes litterally stumbled into the algae inversion layer that was sitting in ambush at 30fsw. At first we tried to push through it to about 45fsw with no luck. Believe us when we say "it's bad" viz drops to
Our current open water class had their final pool session yesterday. They worked on buoyancy skills, and removing and replacing equipment underwater. They passed the watermanship test, so students will be turning their attention toward the open water dives in the Puget Sound. We had some challenges, but all-in-all the students are eager to face real dive conditions. Hopefully next week....Newly Certified Divers!
Class Reminder - Buoyancy Optimization Course classroom session is this Sunday, 10am. We'll cover all of your questions about optomizing your buoyancy control, and do an equipment review, and weights and trim analysis, before we move into confined water for your underwater obstacle course practice later this month.
Earlier this week HiTek Scuba conducted a pool experience dive for the kids and faculty at the Washington State School for the Blind. It was an absolute joy bringing the exhilaration of breathing underwater to students that were visually impaired. Although many of the students couldn't see what it's like underwater, the feeling that they experienced was a joy for us all. Check out the photo album that we've put on our page. It's a reminder to us all how fortunate we are as divers to get to do what we do. Thanks to Jadia Ward for the pics. Safety, and gentleness were the words for the day and HiTek Scuba was privileged to provide both.
Need to refresh your basic scuba skills to start the 2010 Summer season. Check out the HiTek Scuba Refresher Clinic. We'll help you get back in the swing of things in no time, and ready to hit the water safely. http://www.hitekscuba.com/clinics.htm
The weather is starting to get better in the NW (so they keep telling us anyway) so for those divers that tend to stop diving over the winter months, it's time to shake off the rust and sharpen up those skills. HiTek Scuba can help out. Come jump in a pool with us as part of the Peak Performance Buoyancy Clinic that we are offering on April 25th. Call us for details.
We just finished another class and pool session this weekend, had a good class. Students all got to show off their newly found love of removing and replacing their mask. ;)* Seriously though, everyone did well, and are looking forward to their next class on Wednesday. Time to start serious work on buoyancy skills.
Open Water first class session tonight at 7:30pm. Read those knowledge reviews and study up, don't forget, "There WILL be a quiz".
