This was a fun painting, and something a little different for me. Different in that the animal subject was kept small within the painting. It was necessary to emphasize the scale of the Tetons behind the pronghorn.

During my spring visit to Yellowstone this year, I had a special encounter with an elusive pine marten. I've seen only glimpses of them before - usually as a flash of brown fur scurrying up a tree or crossing the road. They are so FAST. This one however, gave me ample photo ops. At the time I saw it, I was photographing a mama black bear and her 2 cubs up in a tree with a huge crowd of other photographers and onlookers. The marten quickly diverted my attention. I noticed it was crossing the forest floor and approaching closer and closer. I wanted photos of a pine marten WAY more than a black bear, so I quietly left the bear paparazzi in pursuit of the marten. I set myself up in the direction I thought he was heading, and sure enough he eventually appeared on the fallen logs in front of me. It was an awesome moment to finally see one of these guys up close and I got some great reference shots to boot. This painting was inspired by that encounter...

I spotted this pika while hiking the Cascade Canyon Trail in Grand Teton National Park last fall. It was busy collecting leaves and grasses for the cold winter ahead. They are undeniably cute!

🔴 Sold. HUNTING COYOTE - LAMAR VALLEY, 7x10, watercolor on Arches 140 # cold press wc paper.
On a frigid winter evening in Yellowstone, I spotted this coyote and its mate hunting a frozen Lamar Valley for whatever they could find. They would listen intently for movement under the snow and pounce headfirst into it for their prey. I watched them until the light disappeared.
