A large study of more than 150,000 adults demonstrated a lack of association between stimulant use and incidence of heart attack, sudden cardiac death, and stroke.

“In our population-based cohort of more than 440,000 young and middle-aged adults, including more than 150,000 users of ADHD medications identified through filled prescriptions, we found no evidence of an increased risk of MI, SCD, or stroke associated with current use compared to non-use or remote use of ADHD medications. We also found little support for an increased risk for any specific medication or with longer duration of current use. Results were similar when users were restricted to new users. Rate ratios did not appear to be influenced by prior cardiovascular disease or by prior non-ADHD psychiatric conditions. They also were similar across age groups.”

Adults who have ADHD but do not know it are at much higher risk than the general population for serious problems. Severe stress, depression, and anxiety disorders often occur when ADHD goes undiagnosed.

Adults with untreated ADHD are:

8 times more likely to have a sleep disorder.
7.5 times more likely to have treatment-resistant depression.
3.7 times more likely to have an anxiety disorder.

ADHD genetic studies show that recurrence risk to first-degree relatives is about five times higher than the population prevalence.

People with childhood ADHD are nearly twice as likely to develop a substance use disorder compared to individuals who don’t have childhood ADHD.

ADHD patients treated with stimulant medications experience a 60% reduction in substance abuse disorders compared to those who were not treated with stimulant medication.

Additionally, research suggests a 10% reduction in substance use disorders for every year of ADHD treatment, especially for patients who start at an earlier age.

Treating ADHD is safe for both adults and children.
A pivotal study published in 2019 showed that “ADHD treatment may add an average of nine to thirteen years to the lifespan of children and adults diagnosed with ADHD.”

The average person takes 11 years to begin treatment for their mental health.

Common barriers include:
Imposter syndrome - “Don't these symptoms kind of describe everyone? Did I exaggerate to get the diagnosis I wanted? Maybe I’m just being dramatic.”
Low self-worth - “Why try? I’m to blame for how I feel; I don’t think I even deserve to feel good”. (I feel bad because I am a bad person) I cause my bad feelings because I am not good enough.”
Fear of negative outcomes - “I can barely stand life as it is. What if medication makes things worse?”
Poor motivation - “I hardly have the time and energy to go to work. Finding a good psychiatrist seems impossible.”
Stigma - “People with mental illness are perceived as incompetent, unpredictable, lazy. I don’t want to be labeled with something like that.”
Access - “I need to find a provider that’s accepting new patients, accepts my insurance, and doesn’t have a 6-month waitlist? Seems impossible.”
Medicine is a crutch - “Relying on medication would just enable my weakness. I should be able to handle this on my own.”

“Prevalence rates are increasingly similar by gender, but the diagnosis rate among American men is nearly 69% higher than it is among American women”
There are several reasons for this. Those assigned female at birth (AFAB) have different sociocultural pressures in childhood which can promote more masking behaviors. AFAB persons have more estrogen in adolescence which helps hide dopamine issues in ADHD. There is significant bias among many medical providers that make them more dismissive of symptoms in AFAB as well.

Many patients don’t know there are two DIFFERENT kinds of stimulant medications.

Amphetamines like Adderall or Vyvanse
&
Methylphenidates like Ritalin or Concerta

About HALF of patients with ADHD will respond much better to only one or the other. While 41% will respond equally to either.

Some providers will begin a medication and never help you compare medications to see which works better with your body. We begin with a short trail of each type to determine what works best for YOU.

You might be on the wrong medication for your ADHD.

Stimulant medications work 85% of the time, BUT many patients don’t know that there are two different classes of stimulants.

Amphetamines (AMP) like Adderall
&
Methylphenidates (MPH) like Ritalin

Many patients just start on a medication and never compare these two types of medications to see which works better with their bodies.

About 41% of patients with ADHD will respond equally well to each medication type BUT a significant percent of patients respond much better to one or the other.
