😴Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a progressive neurological disease. That is why, treating the structural or airway aspects early in the course of the disease makes the biggest impact. My mentor at Stanford, Dr. Christian Guilleminault was passionate about recognizing the early stages of this disease process in children and intervening early before blunted arousal thresholds occur, before hypertension occurs, before atrial fibrillation occurs as a downstream effect - partnering with orthodontists and surgeons is critical. Even now, I find parents are reluctant to have their child evaluated and treated even we point to data like an increased rusk of mental health problems in the teen years. Listen here as I explain one aspect of how the brain is involved in the pathological processes we see in OSA.
