Belmont to Open its First Golf Course!
Local headlines might have read like that in 1925. In the vibrant echoes of 1925, local headlines sang a tale that would rival the grandest of adventures. A visionary trio—Lyon, Monroe, and Miller—embarked on an audacious endeavor to craft an opulent sanctuary of leisure. Their vision? An illustrious 18-hole golf course, nestled beside a majestic clubhouse boasting luxuries beyond imagination. With swimming tanks shimmering in the sunlight, tennis and handball courts beckoning the athletic elite, and a children's wading pool that whispered of whimsy, "Belle Monte" promised to be the crown jewel of the Peninsula and cost $65,000 to complete.
But this wasn't merely a dream—it was a spectacle brought to life. A spectacle that lured prospective buyers from afar, tempting them with free bus rides from the bustling streets of San Francisco, where promises flowed as freely as the beer, and where the coveted key to club membership accompanied every lot sold.
Around 1929 the Belle Monti project fell on financial hard times and an attempt to salvage the operation was launched by opening the club to the public. But the 1929 stock market crash forced members to either drop out or move away and the corporation went bankrupt.
The “Hillcrest” golf course was eventually subdivided into lots for the WWII returning veterans, and today, we find only remnants of a bye-gone era with the county club, now the Congregational church of the Peninsula, and street names such as Fairway while stately homes, now ensconced in Belmont's historic registry, stand sentinel along the forgotten perimeter of the once-glorious course.
