World Kindness Day is an international observance on 13 November. It was introduced in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement, a coalition of nations' kindness NGOs. From August 13 to 19, qualifying clothing and footwear $100 or less will be exempt from the state's six percent sales tax. Additionally, the first $40 of any backpack purchase will also be tax-free.
Dear Prince George’s County Public Schools Families:
With the first day of school (Monday, August 28) less than one month away, please make note of the following updates and reminders for the new school year.
Backpack Requirements
In a change from the previously announced requirement regarding clear backpacks, the policy will now only apply to ninth through 12th graders and students in Non-Traditional Program North, South and Middle. At present, clear backpacks are optional for sixth- through eighth-graders. PGCPS will evaluate the policy for middle school grades at the end of first semester and communicate any modifications prior to the end of Winter Break. Mesh alternatives are not allowed. The school system is working with community partners to assist high school students in need.
Back-to School Drive & Dash
Join us for our annual Back-to-School School Drive and Dash events sponsored by the Excellence in Education Foundation for PGCPS on Saturday, August 12 at three locations: Charles Herbert Flowers High School, High Point High School and Oxon Hill High School. Free backpacks will be distributed from 9 a.m. to noon while supplies last.
No Shots? No School.
Need shots for school? Head to a free immunization clinic in school wellness centers to get up-to-date with vaccinations. Appointments are required. View clinic dates and visit www.marylandvax.org to make an appointment.
Fentanyl Information Session
We are continuing our work to raise awareness around the risks associated with fentanyl by equipping families with the knowledge and tools needed to keep students safe. There will be a family information session at Thurgood Marshall Middle School on Wednesday, August 16 at 6 p.m. The event is open to the public.
Transportation
In light of the continued shortage of bus drivers regionally and nationally, we ask for your patience during the first weeks of school. Please update phone numbers, emails and emergency contact info in SchoolMax. To view your bus stop, use our Infofinder tool. Transportation questions can be submitted online. This school year, all students can also ride TheBus operated by Prince George’s County to school for free with their school ID. No registration is required. View school routes here.
Enjoy these final weeks of summer break. I look forward to welcoming you back to school!
Sincerely,
Millard House II
Superintendent
Atentamente,
Millard House II
