Hello and Happy Weekend, everyone.... we are winding down our classes on both Monday and Saturdays with only two more of each to go.... projects are being finished and everyone should be so proud...you've all done a GREAT job at learning the basics. As soon as everyone is finished, we will be doing a nice video to post here to showcase our students' hard work and great efforts. If you normally attend either Monday night or Saturday afternoon, and find that for some reason you can't make your normal class time, please feel free to attend the other class so we can have enough time to finish up our projects. Stay tuned because we are in the process of putting together an extension of this class at the Maker's Space for the first Monday of June through 6 weeks... we will only be accepting students who participated in the first course this Spring. Students will learn more skills, such as buttons and button holes...installing zippers....and minor alterations and furthering their skills in pattern reading. There will also be instruction in basic crocheting if there is enough interest.... please stay tuned!
Happy Friday, everyone, please don't forget to bring your patterns, fabric and sewing kit with you tomorrow....we will be pinning and cutting out our fabric. If you are a member of the Monday night group and have had to miss a session or two, tomorrow from 2-4 would be a great way to catch up and get back on track for Monday night! See you there
Happy Friday, everyone... just a reminder that we will not meet at the school tomorrow... instead, we will meet at Old Town Fabrics at 135 N. Broadway St. at 2PM....be sure to bring your patterns with you so we can get exact yardage if you plan to purchase your fabric there. See you soon
Happy Weekend, everyone... just a reminder that we will be meeting at Old Towne Fabric for our sewing class tomorrow night. The only thing you will need to bring is the pattern that you chose for your main project. We will meet at 6:30PM and it will probably be a brief meeting. Old Towne Fabric is located at 135 Broadway St. in Berea.... see you there!
Just a heads up, I cannot drive on ice and snow so if we DO get this snowy mess on Friday and Saturday, we will postpone class until next Saturday. We will just add another week onto our program. Please stay tuned for more info as the weekend arrives!
Just a reminder for everyone who signed up for the sewing classes... we are meeting tomorrow at 2-4PM at the Berea Community School .... in the Makerspace at the rear of the parking lot near the stadium.... the door just beyond the white tent. Please be sure to bring your sewing kits. I'm so excited...see you there
I just want to give a HUGE thank you to everyone who came and worked through all those first time anxieties at our sewing class; the room was packed! The next time will be much smoother and before you know it, you will be sewing some summer outfits.... you'll see!

Learn How To Sew, Easy Sewing Class For Beginners! If you’re feeling intimidated by that sewing machine in your closet or just looking to get started, this is the class for you! Our sewing expert, Gretchen Hi...
Hello, everybody... I just spoke with Hobby Lobby in Richmond... ****THIS is the week they have the sewing supplies (not fabric) at 50% discount!! Please take advantage of this to purchase the required supplies for our class, if you do not already have them!
Just a gentle reminder of what's needed for this class:
What to bring: Supplies required for the first class:
new fabric scissors--sometimes you can find a set with a large pair of scissors and a smaller pair-this is recommended because it's helpful to have smaller scissors for snipping threads
Pins-get the box of pins with some kind of large head rather than
just straight pins-these are easier to pick up
pin cushion
tape measure
seam ripper-a small one is better than the large one
storage container or sewing basket to keep these supplies in
seam gauge/or12 inch ruler and/or yardstick (optional)
a packet of hand sewing needles-this can be a multi-pack with
various sizes
thimble
**Hobby Lobby runs a 50% off sale every other week on all these items, call them ( 859-623-4412) and ask if the sale is on if you are interested in saving some $$
All other supplies -fabric and thread- will be provided for the first and second classes
*****IMPORTANT. Fabric scissors are only used for cutting fabric. put them in your container or sewing basket and don't open them until the first class.
Here is the class syllabus for our 9 weeks workshop:
2/28 and 3/5 Watch video. Wind a bobbin, thread the machine. Make a napkin
3/7 and 3/12. Make more napkins. Free time to experiment with machine settings, practice hand stitching and sew on a button
3/14 and 3/19 discussion about different types of fabrics. Choose a project/pattern. Print, tape pattern together.
**if you have a laptop they should bring it tonight so we can show how to do pdf patterns
3/21 and 3/26 Field trip! Meet at Old Town Fabrics shop on Broadway at 6:30 (3/21) and 2PM(3/26). Look at fabrics. Buy some if you want. Likely will be a shorter class.
3/28 and 4/2 Finish putting patterns together if needed. Put pattern on fabric and cut. Begin sewing if time allows.
4/4, 4/9, 4/11, 4/16 sewing time process and complete projects.
4/18 and 4/23 finish projects. Embellish projects if interested. Prepare for our “Walk the Plank” show
4/25 and 4/30 “Walk the Plank”. Take photos.
Each class session will end at 8:15/ 3:45 and everyone needs to clean up their work area.
We are EXCITED to announce the final decision on the upcoming sewing workshops:
1) In compliance with the Berea Community School protocol, masks
will be worn at all times by each person in attendance.
2) We will offer the same class instruction on Mondays/6:30PM -
8:30PM AND Saturdays/2:00PM - 4:00PM
3) Both classes will run 9 weeks in length
4) There is a 20 person limit to each session
5) There are only 10 machines available through the school, so if
you have your own machine, please indicate that you do when
you sign up. *** Also, for those bringing your own machines,
please also bring the manual and accessories for that machine.
6) If you plan to bring young beginners, and please know they are
more than welcome, you will be responsible for them at all
times.
7) Families will be given their own table to work on, with chairs for
sitting. If your family doesn't have a machine and you wish to
use one from the school, only one machine can be supplied per
family.
8) If there are people who only want to audit the class, i.e., observe
while others work, that will be limited to 5 people per session,
however no machine can be supplied by the school.
9) There will be no food or beverages allowed at the class except
for water in a container with a spill proof top.
10) If the Berea County Schools is closed for weather emergencies,
then there will be no class that day/night... it will add on to the
end of the sessions.
11) Class dates for Monday Nights: 2/28, 3/7, 3/14, 3/21, 3/28, 4/4,
4/11, 4/18, and 4/25
Class dates for Saturday Afternoons: 3/5, 3/12, 3/19, 3/26, 4/2,
4/9, 4/16, 4/23, and 4/30
*** We will break for the summer and return in the fall for another
9 week session in late September, which will end before
Thanksgiving.
**** If you can't commit to the proposed class schedule by 2 classes
for either session, then you are welcome to wait until the Fall
sessions, or you may audit the Spring sessions.
Having said ALL that... please let us know the list is forming now; machines supplied by the school will be on a first come first served basis. When you sign up, it's a commitment, so please indicate who will attend class and if you have your own machine. If you are unable to make any of the class dates, please also indicate that.
We're looking forward to working with you and helping you learn some new skills that will inspire you to take your personal look to a new level
Thank you to everyone who expressed an interest in the upcoming beginner sewing class. We didn't want to leave people "hanging" over the weekend, however, the response to the invitation was amazing and so now, we will need to meet with our partners again to devise a plan not to leave anyone out. It's wonderful that people are honing in on their DIY basic skills and we want to be a part of that. We will have a more definite plan after the weekend when we are able to meet. Enjoy your weekend and stay tuned.
WE are ready to stitch!! Emy Hannon and I met with Rita Payne of the Berea Community School and have formed a cooperative that will allow us to make good use of currently existing community resources there. Rita offered us the use of her building (the maker space in the back of the school) as well as the tables, chairs, and 9 ultra modern sewing machines. This will also provide the school with an opportunity for their fabric arts students to help mentor and observer this learning process. It truly is a win-win situation.
Thank you to everyone who offered us a place to meet; it takes a community effort to make good things happen.
Here are the important details:
Start date: Monday night - 2/28/22 and we will continue to meet on
Monday nights
Start time: 6:30-8:30pm
Place: Berea Community School, 1 Pirate Pkwy, in the rear of the
school in the maker space unit
Who: People who have expressed an interest in learning how to
sew ( age is not so much the factor as being tall enough to
sit in a chair and still be able to reach a foot pedal on the
floor comfortably)
What to bring: Supplies required for the first class:
new fabric scissors--sometimes you can find a set with a large pair of scissors and a smaller pair-this is recommended because it's helpful to have smaller scissors for snipping threads
Pins-get the box of pins with some kind of large head rather than

We will have 9 community sewing machines to use, so this kind of limits how many people can be in the class. We feel that if someone has their own machine to bring that would be fine. We can also allow a "family" to use one machine, but just take turns.
We are now starting a list of committed class members; if this class works for you, please ask to sign up...and if there is more than one person from your family, please indicate that.
We are so excited and look forward to our first class. If you have any questions, please contact this page for further information.
Please review this video to familiarize yourself with all the terminology of the sewing machine. You may need to review it several times, but we will also view it on the first night to help you understand more clearly about how to use your sewing machine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnTwT-ifLkU

You may join the page or like it, and as soon as I have more information about it, I will be adding it to the page as a post. It is my intention to start by the first week of March if possible.
When you go to the page, do me a favor and tell me when would be a good time for you to have this class. As it is for me, I work during the day online with students so evenings will be best for me, but we could always consider the weekend afternoons if we need to. The class should last between 1.5 and 2 hours, from my perspective, however I am open to what is best for everyone in the group. We should meet weekly, if possible.
There will be no charge for my time, but you will need to purchase your own supplies, and if there is a fee for the meeting place, we will need to find a way to cover that as well.
Some of the things we will cover are basic sewing skills, pattern garment making, sewing for the home, embroidery, and crochet (if anyone is interested). We will cover how to evaluate and purchase fabric for its appropriateness for a project, how to fit and alter patterns for personal use, different types of finishing touches, as well as different types of seams. This is a very basic course, but you should be able to put together an outfit you would be proud to wear... your clothes... your way!
