There are few things we can add to this great summary!

These really only being cost of routine care not included, such as a quality diet that each individual dog thrives on, the grooming, training and general veterinary care which annually is minimum around a grand on average.

In addition, ethical breeders will not continually breed the same mother/father, usually only one repeat breeding if the first litter was exceptional. Nor do ethical breeders breed before maturity of two years old.
Ethical breeders may do back to back breedings as new studies say this may be easier for the mother, but they take into consideration how the dam handled the whole process and if she may benefit from a break.

Always ask a hundred questions, always research and look at what the breeders goals are to find that right match for you!

Want to know why good ethical breeders rarely make money off of puppies?

Let's start off by defining what an ethical breeder is. To be an ethical breeder the main goal should be to better a breed and preserve the qualities that make a breed what it is. While some breeders may focus on certain areas of interest (ex- diversity, sports, service prospects), in general all ethical breeders -should- be bettering a breed, health testing to CHIC or beyond, and proving their dogs in a ring and through titling. They should not be breeding off standard dogs (merle, dogs that lack type, dogs that do not meet the written breed standard, etc.) or breeding for color or money only.

I want to make it clear I am currently not a breeder but it is a huge goal of mine. While it is still unclear if I will breed Calypso I can give you a rough numerical breakdown of what I have spent in the past 12 months to try and see if she is a dog even worthy of being bred.

Dog Show Entry and Travel: $x, # # # (I honestly don't know this exact number but it is a LOT)
Dog Sports and Titling: $x, # # # (another scary number I don't really know)
Embark Genetic Panel (coat traits and genetics): $120
Orivet PRA-RCD4 Test: $70
UC Davis Genetic Testing (EDS, MDR1, Hereditary Cataracts): $70
Dayblindness Test CAGT: $80
UC Davis Diversity Testing: $85
AKC DNA Profile: $55
OFA Genetic Submission Fees: $100
Eye Cert: $100 so far (must be redone annually)
Dentition: $15 (done by vet and submitted)
Patellas: $15 (done by vet and submitted)
Thyroid: $125
Echocardiogram: $280
Hips/Elbows: $500 (have to wait until 24 months to do this)

The purpose of these health tests is to make sure that any puppy that is produced has the best chance possible to not have preventable health or temperament problems. The purpose of dog shows is to prove that a dogs structure and movement is correct and to standard. Titling and dog sports shows that a dog can and will work and is trainable. If any of these things goes wrong or if a dogs temperament is undesirable... a good breeder will lose all of that invested money and not breed a dog. This isn't even including potential stud fees, whelping costs, and pre-post natal care a dam may need during breeding. These numbers also don't even include supplements, monthly prevention, quality food, vet care, and tons of other qualities that are part of owning a dog.

This post also isn't just about poodles. Did you know that almost every breed has a set of required health tests to earn a canine health number through OFA? Check out this link to see the recommended testing for your dogs breed. An ethical breeder will have CHIC on their dogs before they are bred.
https://ofa.org/chic-programs/browse-by-breed/

Long story short- look at the health testing your breeder has done before you buy a puppy. If they are charging $2000+ for a dog with absolutely no health testing that has not been proven in any way shape or form... they are a backyard breeder making money off of you rather than trying to preserve and better a breed. Other red flags? Breeding for color, breeding dogs before the age of 2, breeding dogs that are off standard, and breeding mixed breed dogs (doodles included, sorry friends).

I know many of you think well bred dogs are too much money but the truth is I have seen many well bred dogs sell for as much money or even less money than some of the fad mixes or backyard bred purebred dogs out there. I actually paid less money for Calypso than I did for 2 of my poorly bred dogs.

And before you adopt don't shop people come after me... ethical breeders are NOT the enemy. Without breed preservation individual dog breeds would fail to exist. Ethical breeders take back their puppies if anything occurs where an owner cannot keep their dog. The true enemy is BACKYARD BREEDERS who breed dogs for money and dump dogs they cannot sell into shelters. I love shelter dogs too. I actually offer hefty discounts in my training business for newly adopted dogs. But adopt don't shop is not the answer here either.

End soap box.

What a weekend!! We headed up to Indiana to the fantastic All American Bulldog Club Triple Crown Spectacular! After a long and fun weekend we have come away with some great memories and some pretty new titles and ribbons!

Ladies First!!

Calypso earned her RACEN and DASH title. Next up she earned her URO2 title by placing 2nd in RO2 trial 1 with a score of 95. Later this afternoon she did her first ever RO3 trial and placed 1st with a perfect score of 100!

Eartha only came for the game! Friday and Saturday she had her trash bunny sport and earned her DASH and RACEN titles! Yesterday she earned two URO1 Qs with both a First and Second place! Today she earned URO1 with a score of 99! Then to add a feather in her cap we had a great first run off leash in her first URO2 Leg! Also ending with a 99 score!! So excited to keep doing this Rally journey with her!

Now for the handsome Cream Puffs!

Bruno is the only one who came away with any conformation legs in a Stellar lineup of dogs! He did this in conjunction with a great Precision run to not only be our first Bred By Total Dog! But also they made the qualification for the UKC Total Dog Invitational! To be held later this year in Lexington KY!

But they said they won’t stop there! Bruno earned a leg in Novice Nosework Containers, his RACEN title and his URO1, then going on to place second in URO2!

And last but not least is our Cowboy Lloyd!

While he showed well, no love in the Conformation ring, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t come to win! Not only having a blast with the trash bunny sport, earning both his RACEN and RACEA as well as DASH! We decided to try to see if there was more than one brain cell in his head! He entered in URO1 on a whim, it’s on leash and if nothing else good for a laugh! Well, he said hold the apaws and not only earned his first two legs Saturday but earned them with Second Place wins! Then he kept us on our toes playing space-cadet and losing focus, but he pulled off a qualifying leg with a score of 91! This goofy, act first think later, boy earned his URO1!!!!! Then, just for kicks we moved up to URO2 and he amazed me by not taking off to meet all his supposed new best friends! AKA The Judge and Stewards, and he pulled off a Qualifying score of 92!!!

He has absolutely blown me away this weekend! We might have found a brain in the fluff after all!

Caitlyn & Bruno were the big winner today!

We’ve had a good start to the weekend, yesterday he earned a leg in his Novice Containers even with grandma not reading his cues correctly!

Today he earned 2/3 legs towards his RACEN, and his first Leg towards his Grand Championship in a stacked and competitive Champion class!

This win earned him his first Total Dog! And qualified them for the UKC Total Dog Invitational!

We are so happy for and excited for Caitlyn & Bruno! Congratulations 🎉

Meet Tanuki, a wonderfully balanced boy with a sunny disposition and a knack for chilling out when needed. He enjoys a mix of activities, from sports to lazy lounging on the couch, and is very moderate in both drive and energy levels. Tanuki is a UKC Grand Champion, earning the honor of Reserve Best in Show, and we've cheered him on since the beginning. Special thanks to Grey and Natasha for sharing your exceptional boy with us!

Bindi is a higher drive girl with a love for fetching balls, but is always down to snuggle on slow days. She effortlessly switches between sports and conformation, and holds the honor of being the first Sable Poodle to earn the Diamond Grand Champion title. In 2022, she topped UKC's list as the #1 Multi-Colored Standard Poodle and ranked #5 among Gun Dogs. Bindi has earned multiple Best in Show and Reserve Best in Show wins and titles across various sports.

Bindi’s first litter just turned 1 in June and have made us proud! 3 UKC CH’s with one closing in on his AM CH (only needing singles)! The litter has dogs successfully started in sports, one earning his AKC RN title in one weekend!

We're expecting lively companions, promising UKC show contenders, and sport prospects in Sable, Brindle, and Sable/Brindle Parti coats, expected to weigh between 40 and 50 pounds.

Breeding is planned for the end of this year, and we'll start accepting applications on August 1st. Please feel free to reach out with any questions – we're excited to hear from you!
