High Lonesome Ranch
Horse Boarding facility located in Olmsted Township
On Memorial Day, we remember all of our fallen, both 2- and 4- legged. We thank you for your sacrifice and we honor your memory. ๐บ๐ธ
Just a reminder to those of you who know and info for those who don't: Please pass horses (whether ridden or driven or being lead) at speeds under 10 mph and at least 6 1/2 feet. When horses spook, they tend to jump into the road instead of away. Please stay safe.
๐
2 stalls will be available May 1st. Would ideally be one boarder with 2 horses but open to two boarders. We would prefer someone who is able to feed dinner (7:30-8:30) 1-2x a week for a board reduction as well! Please PM for more info. Partial Care ONLY barn feeds 3x a day and provides hay, grain, shavings. You turnout and clean your stall. We will require coggins and proof of vaccination.
Equine Herpes Update.
2 horses have been confirmed positive this week at a single facility in Lorain county.
This farm has been on self quarantine for over a week and now is on official quarantine though the State Vet. The virus has spread through the barn and multiple horses have had fevers but are stable/recovering.
These cases appear again to be isolated and NOT linked to any previous cases. There has been no showing/travel by these horses recently.
There is no NO current need to panic or place blame.
All horses are susceptible to multiple illnesses and we take risks every time we travel or co-mingle horses.
Vaccines help decrease the spread of disease and mitigate but not eliminate the risk.
There are NO other current suspect cases in the local area per the State vet.
Trail Etiquette!
If you are new to hiking or recreating in the woods you might not be familiar with some rules of etiquette that help make encountering other recreationists an enjoyable experience. For example, did you know that horses always have the right of way on a trail, and that mountain bikers should always yield to both hikers and horses.
Hikers also must do some yielding when they encounter people on horseback. When this occurs, stop, and ask the lead horse rider which side of the trail they would like you to step to as the horses pass. If you approach from behind, calmly announce your presence and intentions. When the horses pass you, avoid sudden movements or loud noises. Just speak in a calm voice letting the horses know you are not a threat.
Some things to keep in mind when using national forest trails:
โช Make yourself known. When you encounter other hikers and trail users, offer a friendly โhelloโ. If you approach someone from behind, announce yourself in a friendly, calm tone and let them know you want to pass.
โช If you are in a group, hike single file.
โช If taking a break, move off the trail so others can pass by.
โช Hikers coming uphill have the right of way, if you are descending the trail, step aside and give space to the people climbing up.
โช Stay on the trail and be mindful of trail conditions. If a trail is too wet and muddy, turn back and save the hike for another day.
โช Be respectful of both nature and other trail users and keep the noise from electronic devices low or off.
โช If hiking with a pet be sure to keep it under control. Donโt forget to pack out pet waste.
โช Do not feed or disturb wildlife. They need their space and so do you.
These are some hiking etiquette guidelines that will help you have a safe, fun, and relaxing trip when you recreate on national forest trails.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!! ๐ฆ๐๐๐ฝ๏ธ
As we enter Thanksgiving week in the US, many of your vets will be out of town or spending much needed time with their families.
Itโs times like these that horse owners need to practice ๐ฉ๐ซ๐๐ฏ๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ ๐๐๐ซ๐๐ ๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ง๐ .
During this holiday time, as an emergency only vet, I recommend the following:
- ๐๐จ๐งโ๐ญ deworm your horse right now.
- ๐๐จ๐งโ๐ญ start a new feed right now.
- ๐๐จ๐งโ๐ญ get a new round bale of coastal hay right now if youโve let the last one go to dust (give small amounts at a time or mix with a stemmy hay until theyโve had their fill, then give the round bale).
- ๐๐จ๐งโ๐ญ change schedules.
- ๐๐จ๐งโ๐ญ vaccinate your horse right now, especially if you have a known reactor.
- ๐๐จ๐งโ๐ญ be in a rush and fail to soak your feed for long enough (choke risk) - especially if youโre late to feed due to holiday errands/get togethers.
- If you have visitors, limit treats. Ensure gates are closed. Make sure feed doors and bins locked. ๐๐ ๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐๐๐ฎ๐ฅ!
There is already a shortage of equine vets - and the few we do have will likely be out of town or trying to enjoy the holiday.
Letโs all have a very ๐๐๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ฒ ๐๐ก๐๐ง๐ค๐ฌ๐ ๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ง๐ . And letโs let our vets stay home with family!

Weโve received several questions regarding blanketing horses in cold climates. A healthy horse will continue to develop a natural winter coat until December 22 (Winter Solstice), as the days become shorter and temperatures become colder. Horses begin to lose their winter coat (and start forming their summer coat) as the days become longer (starting December 23) and temperatures start to warm (slowly). Blanketing before December 22 will decrease a horse's natural winter coat. The horseโs hair coat is an excellent insulator and works by trapping and warming air. A healthy horse with a thick, dry and clean hair coat can retain enough heat and be comfortable outside in cold climates.
Might have loaded by Halloween ๐ ๐ป
