Of Spanish origin, Xacaras—or Jácaras—are songs performed as an accompaniment to a dance, or as the entr’acte of a separate theatrical performance. Similar to the picaresque lyrics used in the guaracha, the secular jácaras often featured a prankster and his adventures (and frequently used vulgar language), but during the late baroque, the jácara could also be set to a semi-sacred vernacular text. Guatemala was one of the first regions in the New World to be introduced to European music. Cross-pollination between the musical forms of the local indigenous populations, and those of Spain and Naples, created new twists on classic pieces like the xacara and folia, culminating in some of the most interesting music of the Baroque period. Much of this music has only recently been rediscovered, and you can hear these unearthed treasures October 27-29, when Richard Savino and El Mundo bring you “Archivo de Guatemala!” The concerts are THIS WEEKEND, so don’t miss it!
