The luxury brands to watch this year 03/28/2024

Marie France Van Damme, who founded her business in 2011, is known for her silk caftans and sophisticated luxury resort collection. Van Damme's creations quickly became must-have pieces for the jet set. Her independent, slow fashion blends understated European elegance with dramatic Asian aesthetics. Van Damme’s philosophy remains the same for all of her creations: “What you wear should always give you glamour — glamour without the fuss and bother.”

Van Damme’s designs catapulted into the spotlight when Beyoncé chose her silver metallic bathing/body suit for the “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé” movie poster and on-stage visuals. Other A-listers who are fans of Van Damme’s work include Angelina Jolie, Katy Perry, Eva Longoria and Olivia Palermo.

Last fall, Van Damme opened a new salon on Rue de Rivoli in Paris. Available by appointment, the pied-à-terre Parisien is next to the Jardins des Tuileries, Louvre and Musee D'Orsay and nearby to Dior and Yves Saint Laurent.

The luxury brands to watch this year On the heels of London Fashion Week, Milan Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week, not to mention awards shows and their red carpets, we take a look at some of the luxury brands to watch in 2024.

Movement is at the core of my collections.
My fabrics are carefully chosen to comfortably rest on a woman’s body, and effortlessly sway when she moves.

In the heady era of the 70s, I wore my caftans lounging by the beaches on Fire Island to dancing on the streets of New York en route for yet another night at Studio 54.
I still dream of the nights with Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali.

Stylist Doria Santlofer said, “Caftans are comfortable and loose, but they don’t sacrifice style.”

As we celebrated our 10th Anniversary of our Hong Kong ifc Mall store, let us take you on a trip down memory lane.

The 70s were a time of change in the fashion landscape. Affluent American women brought the colours, silhouettes and textures of the French Riviera back to American cities creating that relaxed urban look. Silhouettes were flowy, garments had movement, and the caftan was the hero piece worn by many in Studio 54, including myself.

I made this collection to reflect that era, and show women that you don’t need a suffocating dress to feel sexy. Just a caftan, some heels and the right jewellery.

There is a park in Prince Edward, Hong Kong, near the flower market. They call it the bird garden. You will be surprised to find a dozen bird-owners taking their pet birds to the garden. They sit everyday on a bench and spend hours listening to them sing. A peaceful sight to witness.

This piece adorns the hallway of my office. It’s a photograph of Shanghai Street in Kowloon.
Once Kowloon’s main drag, it’s flanked by shops selling sandalwood incense, Buddha statues, mahjong parlours and an old pawn shop (at the junction with Saigon St).

Pour la petite histoire:
Those part of the Chinese imperial family favoured Crepe de Chine during the Middle Ages and later on during the 1960s, Crepe de Chine was popular for making red-carpet gowns in Hollywood. Today, it’s the perfect fabric for a luxe yet laid back caftan.

02/08/2024

As the name suggests, Crepe de Chine originated in China, as areas like Suzhou and Huangshan produce some of the finest silk one could find.

Inside Asia's emerging demand for quiet luxury brands - BurdaLuxury 12/18/2023

In Asia, independent labels are owning the styles.

For Marie France Van Damme, the founder of her eponymous fashion label which has stores across Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok and Dubai, it’s part of their DNA. “When we started this collection, the objective was to make a collection of understated, sophisticated pieces for the woman who lives and travels the world in style,” she says, “For me, quiet luxury is a lifestyle, not a fashion trend”. Pieces range from long caftans to tunics and day dresses, with prices going upwards of US$2,700. The goal of the collections is to “fuse understated European elegance with dramatic Asian aesthetics”.

“We have seen a gradual shift over the years in the off UHNWI embracing the Marie France Van Damme label for its quiet luxury appeal,” says the designer. The brand’s philosophy is to evoke a sense of confidence and quiet elegance, and to empower all wearers, regardless of season, shape, age, or time of day.

The two customer segments, those primarily looking for logomania and those prioritising comfort and quality, aren’t comparable. “These are two very different customers. The ones buying logos are seeking status. Other customers are buying quality and heritage for themselves.”

Inside Asia's emerging demand for quiet luxury brands - BurdaLuxury Made popular by TV shows like Succession and Hollywood celebrities in courtroom fashion like Gwyneth Paltrow, “quiet luxury” is the hottest trend in luxury right now - so how does it fare in Asia?
