Show statement:

The thought of “home” has always been a comfort and an inspiration to me. My work explores this theme as it intersects with both my own and the historical Black American pursuit of full, undefiled citizenship, equality, and Freedom. Growing up my greatest joy was exploring the pastoral landscape of my immediate and extended home. I include these sites in my work to emphasize our connection to the landscape and to celebrate and document the life and memories that inhabit the home of my ancestors. Contemplating on the ephemerality of family histories, my work combines elements from shared cultural narratives with my own familial traditions and lore.

The selections from, "Just Beyond the River" are inspired by Black Folklore, American Slave Narratives and Harlem Renaissance poetry. This work recognizes America's enduring legacies of colonialism and systemic racism that defines our nation’s history, while reiterating the central narrative that emerges from the referenced memoirs - the ongoing struggle for Freedom.

In this series I have incorporated a personal collection of unidentified portraits which I submerge in a body of water and then photograph to create an image layered with various visual elements from the past and the present. By combining powerful words with these found images of unidentified ancestors drifting through aquatic landscapes, this work acknowledges the courage and sacrifice of our ancestors and reclaims their presence, especially those who have been forgotten, excluded or displaced. The bodies of water in which I photograph are deeply significant to me both personally and historically. They include places where memories of joy, sorrow, love, loss, and liberation continue to reside.

BU Art and Design is thrilled to share that Grace Moon has been awarded a Best of SUNY award for her print “Day and night, I pick flowers for you” at the 2023 SUNY Art Exhibition!

🌺➰🏆➰🌺

Grace’s print was chosen from over 135 nominated artworks from SUNY institutions across the state. She was one of three winners for the top honor (1000$ prize).

When informed of her win, Grace said “I am so glad I met the professors that I have at Binghamton. They have given me a lot of direction and confidence. This community helped solidify that art is something I want to pursue after graduation, and that my STEM background can be an asset, not a disadvantage when comparing myself amongst my peers.”

Grace Moon is currently working on establishing her path as a printmaker who is experimenting with multilayered prints. She will be graduating in Spring 2023 with a major in engineering and a minor in printmaking.

Congratulations Grace!!

Guess what?? Art and Design just designated two corridors in the Fine Arts building exclusively for student-run exhibitions! The inaugural exhibition, “Heaven & Hell” is a two-part show taking place in Pandora’s Box (outside FA 258) and The Labyrinth (outside the wood shop). Works were selected by Madison Mark and Evan Lau from an open call earlier this month and we are quite excited to have these spaces up and running! The work will be up through the rest of the semester.

Working in partnership with Spool Mfg., students in Binghamton University's Site-Specific Installation class created artworks which respond to the factory's architectural, material and labor legacy. Through these projects, students considered ideas around historical traces, collective memory, deindustrialization and gentrification, while exploring the Lestershire Spool Company's history, and the broader ideals set out by The Square Deal in this community. Projects designed by students include performance, installation, projection mapping, stop-motion animation, architectural interventions, murals, and sculpture.
