Self-care.mp4
To wrap up Mental Health Awareness Month, we will be talking about self-care. Self-care is often overlooked as we are naturally used to doing things for others. We do not think to prioritize our own needs. It is important to take a breath and take time for ourselves.
Self-care looks different for everybody, and can include but is not limited to any of the options in the link below. How do you know that you need a moment of self-care?
Take care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Read the information below for some self-care tips and some distraction techniques - a topic that we talk more about in our Living Healthy and Chronic Pain Self-Management workshops.

We're all about enjoying fresh local produce; but, our growing season is short. March is National Frozen Food Month! When you buy frozen food you can eat how much you want (thanks to resealable packaging) and when you want it (thanks to a longer shelf life) without worrying about it going to waste, making your dollar go further with a lower cost-per-serving. This is a great advantage for those cooking for just one or two. And with grocery prices on the rise, this is a great way to feed yourself and the whole family! Learn more: https://buff.ly/3JQlBrM
Happy Valentine's Day! This month also happens to be American Heart Month, a month to encourage people to take care of their cardiovascular health. Self-care includes taking care of #OurHearts, especially during stressful times. Try to take time today to meditate, go for a walk, prepare a heart-healthy dinner, or get a good night’s sleep. October is Health Literacy Month – a time when health organizations, literacy programs, libraries, social service agencies, businesses, professional associations, government agencies, and other groups work together to integrate and expand the mission of health literacy. Together, we can build a world with greater health equity where all people can attain positive health outcomes! https://buff.ly/3tPp1pi An estimated 90 million Americans have low health literacy, including many: with lower socioeconomic status or education; who are elderly; with low English proficiency (LEP) and/or who are non-native speakers of English; and who are receiving publicly-financed health coverage or other socio-economic assistance. HIV/AIDS is more common than you think. Unfortunately, stigma often creates barriers for people living with HIV and even prevents some from getting medical treatment. We can stand up together and #StopHIVStigma.
A few examples of HIV stigma are:
- Believing that only certain groups of people can get HIV
- Making moral judgments about people who take steps to prevent HIV transmission
- Feeling that people deserve to get HIV because of their choices

June is PTSD Awareness Month. Traumatic events like car accidents, natural disasters, combat or the loss of a loved one can have a devastating impact on the mental health of those who witness or experience it. Some people may experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result. If you recognize someone is struggling, consider these tips: - Ask for permission to talk about it. - Resist prying for detailed information. - Avoid reflexively saying “I’m sorry.” - Don’t call someone a hero - they may not feel like one. - Express that it can get better with treatment, but acknowledge it may get worse first. - Don’t take their behavior personally. - Let them know it’s ok to seek help and treatment. If you expect someone may be at risk of harming themselves or others, seek emergency help. Call 988.
