Meet Corey, Kitchen Supervisor at Royal Pines of the Jimmie Hale Mission. He underwent a transformative journey through the Jimmie Hale Mission program in 2016. Struggling with alcoholism and navigating the challenges of divorce, Corey candidly admits, "I lost all self-respect and lost sight of who I was." However, he credits the program with turning his life around, emphasizing, "This program has been a profound change for me."
Since his recovery, Corey has not only served as a Resident Assistant but has also become an ordained apostolic minister. Reflecting on his experience, he advises others, "Take it slow, endure, and you will see the results."

Corey finds inspiration in Psalm 34:8, which reads, "Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes..." His journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and faith, showing how dedication to personal growth can lead to a fulfilling and purposeful life.

Meet Paul, our Assistant Kitchen Supervisor at the Shepura Men’s Center. Formerly battling addiction himself, Paul now finds purpose in nourishing both body and spirit among our clients. He understands their hunger, both physical and spiritual, and believes in showing them love and respect through every meal. Paul's journey reminds us to thank God for the opportunity to serve and support others on their path to recovery and faith.
"Clients want someone to listen, they sort it out and it means the world to me. They come in starving. I show them the love and respect they deserve."
Every day Paul prepares food to nourish the men. He knows that if they are hungry, he will feed them regardless of the time of day. He states, "Whatever you need, if they are hungry and thinking about food, how can they do the work to get a relationship with Christ?" Paul believes in living each individual day and embracing what comes. He knows that, "We can only have peace without the self, with Christ."

Our Story

In the late 30s and early 40s Jimmie Hale was known as the town drunk, but he eventually gave his life to Christ and began rewriting his story. Armed with a desire to share God’s life-changing love with others and to help those walking where he had, Jimmie set out to create a place where homeless men could find encouragement and hope.

Jimmie soon married Miss Jessie Davis, a school teacher from Moundville, Alabama, and the couple founded the Mission on March 25, 1944. Lives weren’t the only thing the 39-year-old was hoping to help reinvent as the first location was the same building where he had sold his last drink as a bartender.

Sadly, Jimmie passed away just eight months later due to health complications, leaving behind a 27-year-old widow, who was pregnant with their first child. Jessie refused to forfeit her commitment to the dream she and her husband shared, however, and her resolve would prove to be the foundation on which the Mission would stand for generations to come.

Jessie was an incredible woman of faith and dedication and ultimately kept the facility alive for more than a decade on her own before God called Leo Shepura to the work. In 1954, the duo served the first meal on Thanksgiving Day and began housing overnight guests. They would go on to lead one of the city’s most impactful non-profit organizations for 36 years.
