"The real goal of Yoga is to understand oneself by making the mind clean and calm. Yoga is not just a set of physical postures, meditation, and breathing techniques. Yoga helps us to develop mental purity and serenity, which are both necessary to understand oneself. That is the purpose of Yoga and all the yogic practices have this aim in mind. The physical postures also help us to achieve mental serenity. Through physical serenity, through a healthy and relaxed body, we can easily experience mental peace.

The condition of the body has a lot to do with the condition of the mind. So we take care of the body by practicing certain postures, which are called asanas, and eating a clean diet. Asanas are different from exercises; they are poses that are held for a certain length of time, in a relaxed, steady way. Through the practice of asana, proper diet, and observing proper virtues the mind remains calm. These virtues are mentioned in almost every religious scripture." – Swami Satchidananda

If you haven't already picked this up, I highly recommend the book My Grandmother's Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies, by Resmaa Menakem. One of my original yoga teachers, Nikki Myers, regularly taught that 'the issues live in the tissues' and this book has so many practices aimed at processing and metabolizing those issues. Whether you think it or not, we all have been impacted by race in this country and the pathway to healing is through the body in community. Summer Cushman and I will be leading sessions of the practices Resmaa offers in this book on Mondays at 9amPT/12pmET starting next week through our online membership community, the Yoga Church Community Hub. I recently shared this within the Yoga Church online community hub as we are working with our intentions: "I want to remember that I'm not this body, in sickness or in health. I'm not my circumstances, in good times or bad. I'm not the bad mood I was in the other day, nor the good mood I started this day with. I'm not my bank account. I'm not my house. I'm not my productivity. I'm not my successes or my failures.

I want to remember that I am the embodiment of divinity."

As you define your intention, the work turns to the HOW of remembering and implementing that intention. Summer shares about the yoga practices that support the HOW.

Wondering if Zoom Yoga Movement classes are right for you? Hear thoughts from someone who's zoomed with me: "I have been taking Marci’s yoga class via Zoom since the beginning of COVID. Marci is so good at giving verbal cues as we get into and hold poses. On Zoom, you can’t easily glance up to make sure you are doing a pose correctly but with the cues Marci gives, I can get into a pose and then tweak it as I listen to her describing how differs parts of my body should feel. My enjoyment of Zoom yoga has been enhanced after I purchased earbuds. It has made listening even easier." -KA

*Short teachings you can read through (about the autonomic nervous system, Ayurvedic wisdom, and of course, the Yoga Sutras),
