Day 21 - Christmas Card Retrospective 2014
We've added a few more family members now, and another acrylic and collage painting. Hope you can be with the ones you love this Christmas. If Covid taught us anything, it was to cherish those in-person times with family. Travel safely. Stay healthy. Cherish the little things.
Day 20 - Christmas Card Retrospective 2013
This acrylic and collage painting is called "Snowyapolis" - as you might have guessed, Minneapolis is usually quite snowy at Christmastime. If you're dreaming of a white Christmas, you might have to go further North this year, as I hear from my MN sources the Twin Cities have no snow right now. Find the magic of the season. Savor the silence of falling snow. Keep dreaming.
Day 19 - Christmas Card Retrospective 2010
This is the year the Minnesota Twins opened a new stadium, and Courage Cards commissioned this painting of Target Field and the downtown Minneapolis skyline. In addition to the cards, this image was licensed by Puzzle Twist for a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle with some amazing "twists." Happy Tuesday. Stay warm. Hope your day's a home run.

Day 18 - Christmas Card Retrospective 2009
As the years go by, we've added a few people to our family, as this acrylic and collage painting/card shows. Only a week until Christmas! Slow down. Spend some time with your family. They don't stay little very long, so hug a child.
Day 17 - Christmas Card Retrospective 2006
"NYC Dazzle" was another card commissioned by Courage/Kenny at www.couragecards.org There's nothing like New York at Christmas time. When we lived in NJ and our kids were little, we went in to NYC to visit Santa at Macy's, ogle the toys at the original FAO Schwarz and visit my brother Tom. Later we went with dear friends from MN, Audrey and Leo. We saw the Rockettes, shopped 5th Avenue, had a huge Italian dinner at La Mela and survived some crazy cab rides. Happy Sunday. Embrace the magic of Christmas. Make spaghetti.
Day 16 - Christmas Card Retrospective 2004
When "Gloria and Franko Toast the Season" it was with coffee or hot chocolate. There was another version with martinis. Gloria was (or is) my alter-ego - the life you want to have - young, thin, city girl with flowing hair, she can do anything. It's purely a coincidence her boyfriend's name is Franko. They were featured in many of my paintings during this time period. Eat. Drink. Be merry!
Day 15 - Christmas Card Retrospective 2003
"We Are the World" was a card commissioned by Courage/Kenny, an organization in the Twin Cities that works with children and adults who have injuries and disabilities of all kinds. One of their fund-raisers is their Christmas and holiday cards, which are famous throughout the upper Midwest. You can see their current catalog at www.couragecards.org Be kind to your neighbor. Celebrate diversity. Seek peace on Earth.
Day 14 - Christmas Card Retrospective 2002
This was the year we moved to a high-rise condo in downtown Minneapolis. Our building was on the Mississippi River, looking across to the bright lights of the city skyline. We loved living there, walking to most everything when it wasn't too cold, and walking in the skyways when it was. This card was our change of address/ Christmas card. Go for a walk. Dress warmly. Enjoy the view.
Day 13 - Christmas Card Retrospective 1998
A huge influence during these years were a few artists groups and people, namely Friday Group, Critical Thumb, and Out-of-Body Group (you know who you are!). The inspiration and creative challenges from these artists and friends were a big factor in creating a new and different Christmas card each year. This card was designed by painting with white paint on a long narrow strip of black paper. Back to Kinkos again, then long suffering husband (again) colored in the green trees on each card with magic marker. Happy Wednesday. Be creative. Inspire gratitude.
Day 12 - Christmas Card Retrospective 1996
Throughout the years I had a number of free lance commercial art jobs illustrating children's workbooks, stories and products. This joyful little angel was a version of a tooth fairy for a client. It was back to Kinkos with the black-and-white sketch, then each card tied with some sparkly tinsel and a spot of glitter. The postal service was not a fan. Look for joy. Put on some glitter. Sparkle when you get a chance.
Day 11 - Christmas Card Retrospective 1995
Until I had a home computer and printer, finding a way to reproduce my Christmas cards was always a dilemma. This one was made with a pen-and-ink sketch and taken to Kinkos to print. Then my long-suffering husband helped me hot glue real sticks and little bits of red paper for the cardinals on each and every card. Perhaps the beginning of my collage phase? Have a great day. Be innovative. Stick together.
Day 10 - Christmas Card Retrospective 1992
This birch tree card was made from a watercolor, inspired by my good friend, teacher and mentor Karen Knutson Watercolors. I learned so much from her about watercolors, life, and having fun! It was the early days of color copies, so the colors here are a little more garish than the original painting. We actually had some of those beautiful birch trees along the lake in the back yard of our house pictured yesterday. Happy Sunday. Be colorful. Be kind. Hug a friend.
Day 8 - Christmas Card Retrospective 1987
This card was made with a wood block print, a process I learned in a printmaking class. Carving the design on an 11" x 15" cedar board is very meditative, satisfying and fun. The image was inspired by a photo I saw in a National Geographics magazine. Have a great weekend. Meditate a little. Have fun with your flock.
Day 7 - Christmas Card Retrospective 1980
We loved living in the mountains of North Carolina - it was a whole new world to us after living in Chicago. Got a jeep, got a cat, loved the lifestyle. Hug a tree, pet a cat. Bloom where you’re planted.
Day 6 - Christmas Card Retrospective 1978
We moved to North Carolina in 1978 and this pen-and-ink drawing was our combination Christmas card/change of address. Isn’t it a treat when you go to the mail box and find a real card or letter? Be healthy. Be happy. Keep in touch.
Day 5 - Christmas Card Retrospective 1976
It was a pen-and-ink Christmas card in 1976 when we added another little "fawn," Thomas Francis Carney. I think I copied those deer right out of a "Bambi" Little Golden book. Hug your kids. Be kind to your dear ones. Or your deer ones.
Day 3 - Christmas Card Retrospective 1970
Here's another card from my Miami college days. I took a class in the Industrial Arts department where we learned graphic design and typesetting - did you happen to notice this was in 1970 before computers changed everything? Needless to say, typesetting is not a skill I've found much need for lately. What skills did you have that were replaced by computers? Cherish the past. Accept the present. Embrace the future. Happy Sunday.
December 2 - Christmas Card Retrospective 1969
I was astonished to realize I was making puffy little birds in 1969 and I'm still making a version of these today! This card was made in a printmaking class at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. It's a linoleum block print, with red ink on a shiny card stock - probably what was available in the art department. Have a great weekend. Party with your peeps. Be generous and kind.
TGIF - and happy December 1st. My Christmas Card Retrospective starts today. Almost every year I make a Christmas card, going back to the 60s. This is one of my first, from 1965. I made it in Mr Smith's (or was it Mrs Brattain's?) high school art class with a silk screen process, each card printed individually. Here's a little known fact: I played the French horn in high school. Tomorrow - a card from 1969. Stay warm. Be kind. Be generous.
TGIF - and happy last weekend of summer before Labor Day. This painting is a FB memory from this date in 2015, painted en plein aire at Three Sisters Gallery on Grand Avenue in St Paul, MN. It was a hot and sultry day, with lots of colorful people and festive, fun activities. Lots of changes since then! Have a great weekend. Be grateful. Be cool. Be colorful. Wear your white shoes.

TGIF - I'm feeling pretty grateful that Hurricane Ian has gone north of us, but my heart goes out to those who have been and will be in the path of this fierce storm. It will intensify for us about noon today, but we are still being told to just stay home. OK! Works for me. My hurricane prep yesterday was to get these canvasses ready, so today I will just shut my blinds, pump up the music and try to get a couple of these finished. Stay safe!
TGIF - hope you are enjoying this beautiful August weekend, like those in this 20" x 16" acrylic painting, "Beach Biking." Get out and enjoy summer. It's only 128 days until Christmas! Sorry, didn't mean to scare you. Enjoy the summer weather. Sip a cool beverage. Eat a peach. Be kind to yourself and each other.
TGIF - Did you see that full moon last night? Or the Perseid Meteor Shower? The moon and the stars have been spectacular this week. I couldn't stay awake very late last night, but Gloria and Franko went dancing under the moonlight, the "Serious Moonlight." This original 16" x 20" acrylic painting can be seen at the Pluff Mudd Gallery in Bluffton, SC, along with the work of 20 other local artists. Have a great weekend, dance in the moonlight, gaze at the stars, be kind to yourself and each other.
