Gaited horses and bits
It’s a misconception that you need contact or a shanked bit to get your gaited horse to gait. They should be able to find a neutral back with the correct training and muscling and have a relaxed rein and hold gait. Of course, you do need to help them manage it in the beginning but I am always looking for more opportunities to teach my horse self carriage and to have a relaxed and neutral back.
You should not have to hold your horses head up to get them to gait. Most often, horses who keep their heads up high have a hollow back ( which can create a greater risk for kissing spine in the long run) and tension in the back, loins and excessive muscling under the neck, creating a U neck.
Motion is the lotion of the joints. Correct and balanced movement will always be more beneficial to your horse in the long run.
Working on Que yesterday! I was going to his back right leg to do some stretches and he did a big one all on his own. You could hear some cracking up in his hips from it! talk about a big stretch! Afterwards he was giving us several minutes of releases. Not sure if he knew how to feel about his self adjustment 🤣 Massage and chiropractic work are complementary as when you loosen up the muscles it’s not only easier to adjust the horse, but helps the adjustment stay! Or in Ques case, he adjusted something in himself!
