In Guatemala, I learned something profound about God, his people, and what faith can provide in the most challenging of circumstances. Though the families I encountered were extremely poor, lived miles from paved roads, and had none of the things provided by modern conveniences, they found happiness in family, friendships & faith. I saw this when I stepped into the one-room home of 73-year-old grandfather Mario Alvarez. Inside the humble home was a simple table that also served as a home altar. On it were candles, a rosary, a crucifix & other devotional items. Mario cried as he talked about his love for his late wife (they were married 63 years) and how he prays daily for the repose of her soul. Moved by his faith, I stepped up and joined him in prayer — and immediately felt the holy presence of God. 🙏🙏🙏 Sitting on that plane bound for home, I was overcome with a desire to have their sense of peace in all circumstances.
