Proud of the work these goalies have been putting in this summer so far! Improving each day, pushing each other to be better, asking questions, giving it full effort. 💯

I always have loved reading, and especially reading the works of successful people who have achieved things I want to achieve. I have this old copy of “On Goaltending” by Jacques Plante that I was skimming through today and his first chapter “Do you want to be a goalie?” struck me. This is a guy who played goalie in the 50s-70s, and is one of the greatest all time talking about things that goalies STILL struggle with today (pressure, coaches who don’t know how to work with them, consistency). It’s so cool to remind yourself when you are feeling nervous before a game that EVERY goalie EVER has felt that same thing. You are not alone! And remember what Jacques says at the end, if you are able to stick with it, the joy of the game will pay you back 10-fold. There’s plenty of dated coaching made exercise advice in this book that made me chuckle (don’t do any leg exercises like squats because they make your legs tired 😂) but there are also golden tidbits like this chapter. One last point, this pressure and fear he talks about before games can be crippling and nearly ended my playing career years ago. I’ve worked out techniques that have helped me set those feelings aside and focus on the game and the joy it brings me to play. Reach out to me and we can set up a mentoring session to discuss some of those techniques and how we can apply it to your game!

Hockey seasons are incredible journeys. There are highs and lows. Successes and failures. Good times and and times. After the season ended last night I’ve been thinking and I’ve found that speaking on my personal experiences as a player has really resonated with some of the goalies I coach so here is a story of some adversity I faced during this season and how I handled it. I think that’s why we as a people love sports so much. They are microcosms of life and they can teach us so many lessons. This season was full of ups and downs but I tried my best to learn as much from the downs (if not more) than the ups. This quote from Theodore Roosevelt has always been one of my favorites and I leaned on it a lot throughout this year. During the year I was criticized harshly and often by certain fans of our club whenever things went wrong. Now, I’m not someone who reads posts from fans, when every media interview you do asks you how you are feeling about the fans criticism, it’s hard to avoid. Upon hearing this, this quote always came to mind. Dealing with this kind of criticism was new for me, but certainly not new for athletes. We are under a microscope for our performance and often deal with the unsolicited open of a few loud mouths. While it’s natural to have a gut instinct of anger or “I’ll show them” I choose a different method. You never have to prove yourself to anyone else. You just have to prove it to yourself. I know I gave it my all every practice and game so whatever the crowd says, good or bad, can’t change that. I’m grateful to have had that adversity and to have come through it stronger. This is just one small example of the adversity that may hit during a season. We need to develop our mentalities to weather this type of external noise and shift our focus to the only thing we can control: our own actions. With that said, this is the end of another season. While things didn’t end as we hoped, I’m extremely grateful to Sodertalje S

Connor recently started playing goalie this year, he is always a blast to work with and is so receptive to coaching and has been picking things up very quickly! Love to have videos like this sent to me showing young goalies enjoying the position! Great job Connor! Please send on any great saves you got and I’ll post my favorite next week! 😊
Very proud of @sholly32 for attending his first development camp! He’s a prime example of taking ownership of his own development and finding success. With limited access to goalie coaching the past few years, Mattias has worked on his own game through video analysis, studying NHL goalies, and experimenting on the ice. Mattias is an active learner, passionate about his craft and this is what makes him successful as a goalie and a person! I’m very grateful our campers had the opportunity to learn from him at our camp this summer! Development camps are an exciting time for every participant. For most in attendance it is there first taste of pro hockey, an acknowledgment of the work you have done in the past and a sign that you have some promise in the future. Most importantly, it’s an opportunity to learn, to DEVELOP. If these individuals who have all had many successes in their careers can still learn, develop, and improve, than all of us can and should! Every day we skate and train is our own development camp. It’s your responsibility to take control of your own development so put the work in and never stop growing & learning! #lakings #development #devcamp #goalie #goaliecoaching #goalietraining #goaliegram #goaliesofinstagram #instagoalie #motivation #inspiration
I love the concept of turning obstacles into opportunities. We shouldn’t be scared away by an obstacle but excited about what it will bring out of us. When something is holding us back, or we realize we aren’t quite where we want to be, we can view this as a good thing! If you think you are good now but something is holding you back, and you are able to find a way to overcome that just imagine the new level you will reach! Personal Example: Playing the puck was something I was never confident doing when I was younger. I did the bare minimum while playing junior hockey and just wrote it off as an weak area of my game and thought if I was good enough at stopping pucks it would make up for it. When I got to college, I couldn’t hide from it anymore; we had a tough coach who expected his goalies not just to play the puck but to do so with urgency, confidence, and most importantly accurately. I started working on it more and more with our goalie coach and got more confident but still had lots of room to improve. When I got to pro, I didn’t have a goalie coach playing in the ECHL so I took it upon myself to shoot pucks before or after practice, have a player dump pucks in for me to play, using any opportunity in practice to get out of the net and play it, and then doing it more in games. While I’m certainly not the worlds greatest puck player, it is an area of my game that I have refined to the point I would no longer call it a weakness like I did before. More than that, I actually enjoy playing the puck now and use it as a way to get engaged in games! I never had a point in my life through college but since turning pro I’ve had 3 multiple assist seasons, and have over 10 assists in my career.
Feeling grateful to have hockey in my life both as someone still playing professionally and as someone who gets to work with younger goalies as a coach. I'm hitting that point in summer in which I get the urge to be back in season, grinding for wins with my team and working towards a common goal. Sometimes I can't believe I get to do this for a living. Playing the game I've loved my entire life and getting paid to do it is all I ever dreamed of as a kid and now it's a reality. I've worked extremely hard to get to this point in my career and in excited to see what's still on store! The experiences I've had playing hockey at a high level are what I utilize when coaching. I know the dedication and effort needed to make it to the next level and in love sharing what I've learned to make the path easier for those coming up! Message me for training opportunities! #prohockey #livingthedream #coaching #hockeycoach #goaliecoach #goalie #goalies #goaliegram @goaligram #dedication #hardwork #hardworkpaysoffs
Myth: Goalies are the worst skaters on the team. This is FALSE! Goalies have to be great skaters and having great edge control, balance and power can make a huge difference in your game. Here is one of my favorite skating progressions to start out a lesson, and one I do myself quite often! Don’t neglect your skating! 1) Forward 1 foot C-Cut (Right and left) 2) Forward 2 foot C-Cut 3) Backwards 1 foot C-cut (R&L) 4) Backwards 2 foot c-cut 5) alternating inside edge hold/long c-cut 6) backwards alternating inside edge hold 7) inside edge hold with a hop for transition (forwards & backwards) 1-7 are is what I call my “Spratter Skating” since @spratter29 had us doing it weekly at BGSU! *not every step is shown but the first few are easy to figure out* 8) “Sway-Spins” my guy @coach__pd94 taught me this one: open up to a t-push, hop and spin landing backwards on the other foot
Quick Update: I'll be playing in 3ice this weekend! 3ice is a 3v3 summer pro hockey league with tour stops all across North America. Due to the schedule conflicting with training camp for HC Pustertal I was not able to commit to playing every tour stop but I will be playing this weekend and hopefully a few more in the future! Every tour stop will be broadcast live and this weekend you can follow the action on CBS sports. I'll be suiting up for team Mullen (coached by Hockey Hall of Famer Joe Mullen) and I'd love your support! Warm up your hockey appetite for game 2 of the Stanley Cup final with some 3ice hockey right before! Anyone who watches, share a photo of your screen in the comments! https://www.3ice.com/
Gotta love goalies getting in on the offense! Great heads up play by Smith on the OT winner! 🔥 Puck handling isn’t every goalies favorite thing to work on but if you can turn it into something you’re confidant doing you can make a big impact. The assists like this are rare but getting out and playing the puck can help stop the opposing teams pressure and get your team breaking out much quicker.
Check out these 🔥🔥 saves from Mattias Sholl last night as he helped his team move on to the conference semi-finals with a 3-1 win in an elimination game over BGSU! Mattias is planning on being in Boise this July to coach the goalie camp along side me! Make sure you sign-up ⬇️ https://forms.gle/BA5K5vyqmXemAJb79
Highlight of the night from last nights win was this flurry of saves at the end of the second period from Coach Tomas! A couple teaching points from this clip: 1) Strong edges: by holding his edges Tomas is better able to control his momentum when going back and forth which enables him to get as hard a push as possible over into the shot 2)Short memory: after the initial big back door save its easy to get caught up in the moment and admire the play, but there was another shot right away that required all the focus. Always have a "next shot" mentality 3) On the second shot Tomas had a very controlled, short slide back on the angle and closed all holes. If you know where you are in the net, use your angles and trust your position! 4) This is by no means a technical save but every game has moments we can't ever predict or recreate. You have to be in the moment, creative and able to adapt to whatever play. Battling hard and getting your body in front of the puck is all that matters at the end of the day, not what save selection you used to do it!
