Salmon River Jet Boat Race-Riggins, ID

Here’s your chance to experience jet boat racing action without leaving your chair!

Watch the videos we captured from the 40th annual Salmon River Jet Boat Race in Riggins, Idaho.

The Bureau of Land Management’s Cottonwood Field Office personnel manage the 112-mile stretch of the Lower Salmon River, where race team drivers and navigators reached blistering speeds through the river’s bends and rapids.

The Lower Salmon is a river recreator’s paradise, attracting approximately 1.4 million visitors a year.

The Cottonwood Field Office offers multiple access points along the Lower Salmon and camping opportunities, including Shorts Bar and Island Bar, which were key in the success of the Riggins Jet Boat Races this past weekend. For more information on recreation sites along the Lower Salmon visit: https://www.blm.gov/visit/lower-salmon-river .

By the way, don’t you want to camp at a place called Shorts Bar or Island Bar?

We would like to thank our Special Recreation Permit holder the Salmon River Jet Boat Race Committee, their sponsor Western Whitewater Association, and all their volunteers for putting on a great event. Our sites and the river were left in great condition. We want to congratulate all involved in a successful event!

In the case of virtual fencing, we think it is safe to say we love what advancing technology is doing! For the past few years, the BLM Shoshone Field Office (thanks to help from a National Fish and Wildlife Foundation grant) has teamed up with a livestock grazing permittee and Idaho State Department of Agriculture to test this innovative method on the Davis Mountain Allotment north of Bliss. Cows wear a collar that emits a signal when they come close to a virtual fence barrier – limiting the areas they can access without building fence where there is high wildlife use. We have learned a few things along the way, improving collar design and efficacy – so we’re pretty excited to see how these improvements work in 2024!

Are you ready to adopt a young wild horse recently gathered from Idaho's rangelands? Several youth from Treasure Valley area 4-H Clubs have done a great job working with wild horse weanlings since February! These horses are leading, loading and picking up their feet -- and they'll be available for viewing and adoption during the Idaho Horse Expo in Nampa this weekend! The competitive bid adoption kicks off at 1:15 p.m. on Sunday at the Ford Idaho Horse Park! We think you should be like Carrie and adopt a wild one! You have to love it when a plan for plants comes together! 🌱🌿🌾🌼🪻 Recently, the College of Southern Idaho Wildland Plant Identification class inherited a herbarium -- or plant sample collection -- from the University of Idaho. There was a snag though! They didn't have a protective home to live and would be gathering dust on top of cabinets until one could be located - which could be months. As it turns out, a few BLM Jarbidge Field Office employees were taking the class this spring and Natural Resource Specialist Pattie Courtney recognized an opportunity back at the office. Several BLM cabinets had just been freed up due to the digitization of record files, so Pattie set out to have two cabinets destined for the excess auction, donated to the College so these precious plant babies had a place to call home! “This just shows that a community can do so much more together than any one individual…” College of Southern Idaho Wildland Plant Identification instructor Bill Ebener

What a great National Night Out in Twin Falls City Park last night! Taking place across the nation, these events bring together communities, law enforcement and first responders under positive circumstances to promote community-police relationships. Our Twin Falls District BLM firefighters and law enforcement officers interacted with many parents and their families about what they do for #YourPublicLands – including showing off the cool equipment required to do their jobs. You have to love it when a small child exclaims “Oh Wow” when looking up at an engine tire! #TFDFire
