Opening morning of 2nd rifle in Colorado started with a bang. and got an early start at 3 in the morning and headed after a couple of bulls we spotted the day before. Within a few minutes after shooting light this bull took two quick shots and was down.

“I rise before the dawning of the morning, And cry for help; I hope in Your word. My eyes are awake through the night watches, That I may meditate on Your word.”

IF THE LORD WILLS

We often have ideas of where our next adventure will be. We dream of far away places where the animals live unbothered by man. A place where giants roam and the only sounds are the wind, the water, and our footsteps against the ground. But we never know how it will all unfold. We go not knowing the story that will be told.

We do not know if the weather will turn.
We do not know if the mountain will burn.
We do not know which animal we will see.
We do not know how long it will be.
In the past it has happened on opening morning.
In the past it has taken weeks enduring.
We do not know if we will fight through brush and brook.
We do not know if we will spend a cold night by a fire and shook.
We do not know if we will hike until our legs are weak.
We do not know if we will have looked from the top of the mountain peak.
We do not know what will happen when the day breaks through the black.
We do not know if we will make it back.
But there is one thing we do know.
If the Lord wills, we will go.

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a v***r that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.”

“Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.” - Proverbs‬ ‭22‬:‭6‬

There will be a day when we are no longer here and our sons and daughters will look back on their lives and the memories that they have of us as fathers. Live in such a way that they remember three things…. We loved the Lord, we loved their mother, and we loved them. How we spent our time with each of those three is the proof of a life well lived.

I’ve been thinking long and hard about what to say about this hunt and I can’t seem to escape one word, sacrifice.

There is a reality that so much is sacrificed by all of the people in my life for these animals. Whether it is my brother who moved his family across the country to gain the ability to hunt these animals and then gave away the opportunity to pull the trigger. Adam who has pushed ahead through countless days of adverse hunts and who I now owe for two sheep hunts. Ben who jumped on the next flight to Alaska in order to offer his wisdom, sheep expertise, and unshakable positivity in the cliffs and adverse weather. And finally, my wife and children who have sacrificed countless days, nights, birthdays, and anniversaries without me there.

At the end of the day, this ram, doesn’t belong to me. It was something I knew before I even pulled the trigger and it is why I have taken so long to put this hunt into words. These animals we hunt and place on our walls are incredible memories, but they are not ours. They are the Lord’s. He created them, He created us, He provided the Ram, He is the Lamb. He laid down His life…. SACRIFICE.

“But the Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” So he said, “Here I am.” And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.” Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.””
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭22‬:‭11‬-‭14‬ ‭

“Behold, I will send for many fishermen,” says the Lord, “and they shall fish them; and afterward I will send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain and every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks.”

We’ve spent our lives dreaming of a trip like this and 2 weeks ago it happened for Adam, Justin, and I. We didn’t know what was in store for us when we left, but we thought it was going to be good. Then God stepped in…

There is a reality that we often make plans and they don’t look the way that we want them to. That week was filled with things going sideways, but we always have two options in the middle of setbacks. Do we accept defeat or do we accept the training? It is easy to give up when your plan doesn’t work, but God has a better plan. He trains and He prepares and He equips us before the real trials ever start. Then once that training is done, He gives us something better than what we could have ever hoped for.

In 3 days we found 151 antlers including this giant 380” deadhead… not a dream coming true, but God’s plan coming through.

”I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.“ - Psalms‬ ‭32‬:‭8‬ ‭

UNSTABLE

This week, this ground, this bear. Every bit of it was unstable. It took 4 days of hard hunting, but we found him. We were at mile 10 and 3000’ feet of elevation gain for the day and finally descending back towards camp. We stopped halfway down the mountain to glass and take a break when we finally spotted him. At first it seemed like he would stay at the back of the drainage chewing on the fresh grass shoots, a perfect opportunity for the next day’s hunt. Then he started moving… within 10 minutes he had covered half a mile. Another 10 minutes passed and another half mile. This bear was moving out of the country and tonight was going to be our only chance before he was gone forever. At 7:25 we packed our gear up and ran 1500’ down the mountain through scree and crumbled granite. Then through the creek we went and a mile back the thick brushy creek bottom. At 7:55 Adam and I were setting up for the shot at 500 yards where he had stopped to chew on the dry bones of a winter-kill mule deer.

We had two options that night. Pray for an opportunity tomorrow or perspire for the opportunity that was provided. My brother often quotes Craig Caster in moments like this… “God will not do by miracle what He has commanded you to do by obedience.”

God gave us the opportunity and we had to take it. When the ground is falling out from under you and what you want is literally walking out of your life, are you going to be steadfast and stable enough to get the job done? Are there situations right now in your life that desperately need stability? Jesus is that stability and He knows the way forward.

”Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.“ - I Corinthians‬ ‭15‬:‭58‬ ‭

Justin, Adam, and I had an incredible week. It was clear God was guiding our footsteps throughout the trip. This is one pack load of many and we’ll be sure to share the full picture soon.

”But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.“
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭40‬:‭31‬ ‭

”In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.” - Proverbs‬ ‭3‬:‭6‬

This week of shed hunting has been nothing but incredible. Everyday it was evident that God directed our steps and our eyes. We were put right on the path to this bull after spotting a brown elk shed across a draw. Have a lot more pictures to come from the week.

Photos from Limitless Outdoors's post 04/08/2024

Had a great few days of picking up sheds 2 weeks ago. In total we found 40 sheds and hiked over 40 miles, but here’s the funny thing. There were many sheds that weren’t worth packing out, let alone hiking over to grab in the first place. Could we have gone and grabbed them? Yes. But they would have added no value to our trip and we would have had to work harder to go get them and carry them out.

The reality is that there are many things in life that we pursue that add zero value to our life and frankly they weigh us down and keep us from achieving what God has laid out for us. In Hebrews 12:1-2 it says ”Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.“

Are you going out of your way to pick up things that add no value to your life? Are you carrying unnecessary weight into your job, your relationships, into your walk with God? If you are, set it down and watch how much easier it becomes to run the race.

Our NEWEST HUNT is up on YouTube!!

Matt just started hunting with us this past year and he managed to take his first mule deer and first bull along the way. He also has an awesome testimony of what it was like to grow up Amish and the weight of relying on works rather than faith.

We hope you all enjoy this episode!

Through faith in Him alone we are saved.

Every year that passes we see it more and more… “I do good deeds…” Good deeds aren’t a replacement for a relationship with the creator of Heaven and Earth. Good deeds can never equal the completed work that Jesus did on the cross, then rose again defeating death.

As a matter of fact God laid out from the very beginning that our deeds or “works” will end in death in Genesis 3:17-19… ”Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’: “Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, And you shall eat the herb of the field. In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust you shall return.””

And then there was faith. The faith Abraham had in God alone that was counted as righteousness. That faith that lead to God’s promise to Abraham that through his Seed (which is Christ) all the nations would be blessed. The faith in Christ that makes us heirs of the promise given to Abraham.

None of us can live a life well enough to be counted righteous. None of us have done everything perfect. None of our good works can repair our broken relationship with God. ”For there is not a just man on earth who does good and does not sin.“ Ecclesiastes‬ ‭7‬:‭20‬

If you have been spending your life working yourself to death, there is someone who has already finished the work that you have been so desperately trying to do and His name is Jesus. He has an incredible life waiting for you and all it takes is faith in Him.

“4 or 5 days...” Swipe ⬅️ for more.

That’s what Shane always says... “You get 4 or 5 of those days that you know will be the best days of hunting in your life.” If you have had one of these days you already know there will not be many more like it. You know just how special it truly is, that fullness of joy.

When I try to understand the verse, “In Your [God’s] presence is fullness of joy.”- Psalm 16:11, I think of these days. What’s funny is that these days weren’t without their struggles and trials. Working up a moose is hard, packing a moose 3 miles is harder, but there was joy in all of it.

An incredible part of giving your life to Jesus is the joy you have, even in the trials. If you’re still searching for that joy and you have come up short looking for it in people, in money, and in the world, turn to Jesus. He has it abundantly.

This picture is from one of those joy filled days.
