"Surround Yourself With the People Who Lift You Higher
Those who are good to you, and good for you." - Belle Liang
When one of your favorite public figures and authors is also your friend. Jane is a person who I trust so completely. That person whose character behind closed doors, is also who she is in public. She inspires both by her example, and by her constant efforts to lift me higher.
How you know if someone’s your friend:
“You can tell them bad news, and they’ll listen. They won’t tell you why you’re stupid.
This is the weirder thing: You can tell them good news, and they’ll help you celebrate.
That’s a good way of deciding who you should have around you.” - Jordan B. Peterson.

We all face setbacks and challenges in life. Our ability to move and successful depends on how we respond to challenges. Research shows that a common psychological process when facing a challenge is to ask ourselves:
Is this impossible or is this important?
If we believe the challenge is impossible to overcome, we view the setback as a sign that we should quit, as we have reached the limit of our capabilities. And that's exactly what we do.
However, if we view the challenge as important that changes everything. A setback is a sign that we are pursuing something noble, grand and worth our time and energy. In turn, we double down and work even harder because the setback reinforces our commitment.
When facing a setback or working with someone facing one, the most powerful thing you can do is ask them:
Are you experiencing this setback because your goal is impossible or important?
.
When guiding young people it's much more important focus on meaningful direction than specific destinations.
Great teachers (and parents and coaches) spend more time asking questions than providing answers.

Our job as a parent or teacher is to cheer our young people toward discovering their own elements of purpose. We aren’t the leaders, we’re the followers in their journey. We trust that our students are going where they need to go.
We are like tour guides on their bus. And we sort of point out, “On your left, there goes an example of you living your core values. Oh, look out to your right—it’s a fight you’re willing to fight.” We’re just pointing out what’s happening as we go along, rather than designing it for them. We don’t teach them their strengths, skills, core values, or service in the world. We whet their appetites for their self-discovery.
And are you?
Parenting has never felt harder. Learn in our upcoming book how letting go of the zero-sum mindset born from a world obsessed with "success" can unlock your student's potential.

How many AP classes should your kid take? How many colleges should they apply to? How do we find the right college or the right job?
Today, more than ever parents have big questions without a lot of answers. Gripped by a fear of getting left behind in an increasingly competitive world, parents feel pressured to push their kids to their limits to be “successful” (and manage their mental health at the same time).

Everyone has their own story to tell about how history had a hand in who you are, as well as how history influenced how you parent your own kids.
Follow this account to see us shed light on how personal narratives—and societal narratives—animate our life choices. Some deep influences are painful to acknowledge. But facing them squarely is critical to rethinking and sometimes undoing them.
Truth from Brené Brown:
True belonging is the spiritual practice of believing in and belonging to yourself so deeply that you can share your most authentic self with the world and find sacredness in both being a part of something and standing alone in the wilderness. True belonging doesn’t require you to change who you are; it requires you to be who you are.
