As flavor month continues, so do our weekly updates about the amazing work Urban Farming Institute of Boston does!

Another great program at UFI is their Men’s Gathering Program which was just renamed by the men in the program to A Gathering of Black Men. This program brings together Black men (60+) living in Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan (the communities UFI serves).

The goals of the program include reducing isolation, building social connections, and helping improve health. The men meet for 3 hours on Saturday where they partake in activities such as Tai Chi and facilitated discussions on health and/or male-centered topics.

“There are special intergenerational events like Barbershop Talk and Game Day. Barbershop Talk is a favorite. UFI transforms one of its buildings into a barbershop. Barbers provide free haircuts to community males of all ages. Local police and firefighter volunteers donate their time and food. At Game Day there is ping pong, playing cards, dominoes, and various board games. There is lots of laughter and comradery during both events.”

Week 2 of Flavor Month!! A portion of tonight’s flatbread sales will again go towards Urban Farming Institute!

This week we are talking about UFI’s Raised Beds Program. In an attempt to decrease hunger and promote self-reliance, UFI provides individuals and families with raised beds for them to garden in their own backyards!

While working to support black, indigenous, and people of color to thrive beyond COVID-19, UFI provides the materials and guidance to individuals starting to grow their own food. Priority is given to those who reside in Mattapan, Dorchester, and Roxbury Area.

Come by tonight or donate directly to UFI to support programs like this that allow individuals to build their own gardens to support themselves, their families, and their communities! Remember that a portion of both in-house and takeout orders will go directly towards Urban Farming Institute every Tuesday of this month.

It’s our first Benefit Bake night with Urban Farming Institute! Throughout the month we want to highlight some programs UFI has.

One of the great programs UFI has is their Farmer Training Program. This program provides aspiring farmers with a curriculum that covers various aspects of urban agriculture, including sustainable farming practices, soil health, crop planning, pest management, and marketing strategies.

With classroom instruction, fieldwork, and mentorship, this training program allows individuals to make their own urban farming ventures and contribute to local food production.
~~~~~~
Be sure to come by tonight to support programs like this to build more sustainable communities all over Boston with the growth of urban farming! Remember that a portion of both in-house and takeout orders will go directly towards Urban Farming Institute.

And just like that, July is here! With this new month, we would like to introduce you to the Flavor Face of Food!

For this month of Flavor, we will be working with the Farming Institute of Boston (UFI) whose mission is to promote urban farming to engage individuals in growing food and building a healthy community.

People in urban areas can often find themselves in what are known as food deserts. With the work Urban Farming Institute is doing, it is hoped that those food deserts can be reduced and people can learn how to create their own farm in their own community!

Our last Benefit Bake of Nurture month is tonight! Be sure to come by and support the Winship School Parent Council - SPC one last time!

Today we are highlighting the council’s funding towards family engagement. The Winship School Parent Council provides funding and volunteers for a variety of family engagement events throughout the year at Winship School, including the Winship Feast in the fall, STEAM night in the spring, and celebrations at the start and end of the school year. In addition, the WInship School Parent Council organizes events for Winship's students and families, including festivals, game nights, movie nights, and playground meetups.
