Introducing "The Way Back When", our signature drink for Sojourners which will be available at The Huntington Theatre throughout the run of the show!
The Way Back When is based on the popular, yet maligned 70’s cocktail, the Harvey Wallbanger. Riffing off of the original recipe of vodka, Galliano, and OJ, this cocktail features West African baobab fruit, Black owned Corvus Vodka and Hella Bitters. This cocktail mirrors the struggles between Abasiama's mission to preserve her Nigerian roots and Ukpong's increased appetite for the American lifestyle.
The Way Back When was created by Kyisha Davenport, a Brooklyn born, Boston based steward of hospitality. Since getting her start in beverage in 2009, Kyisha has used her skills to move the bar industry forward, using mixology as a means of organizing, archiving, advancing policy and more.
The first Black woman in Boston to be honored with an Eater Restaurant of the Year Award in 2019, she has since become the Director of Hospitality and Advocacy at the nationally acclaimed Comfort Kitchen, where she continues to further her mission of developing community based, culturally connected spaces led by Black and brown hospitality professionals in Boston. Comfort Kitchen, which centers comfort food between the West African and South Asian spice trade and diasporas, was named a New York Times’ 50 Best Restaurants in 2023, James Beard Award finalists for Best New Restaurant 2024, and rounding out the top 10 of Boston Magazine’s Top 50 Restaurants 2024.
Tonight we celebrate this inspiring team of artists and artisans with the opening night of Sojourners at The Huntington Theatre.
We look forward to welcoming our theatre community through our doors this evening to celebrate what unites us, rather than what divides us.
Sojourners is an immigrant story. One that explores the complex relationship immigrants have with our country. In this moment, we hope that this story will give us space to reflect on our society and the people that make it up.
