Hay is in the barn, body is feeling fresh, conditions look close to perfect, time to see what I can do! Race goes of at 9:15am local time tomorrow

Going to be racing the GOAT, but the only training partners I could find here are sheep....

When you're heat adapted but it's a treadmill day. Splash zone wasn't that big to start, but then Free Bird came on so things had to get a little rowdy. Feels like fitness is finally starting to come around, just gotta stay hydrated

07/06/2023

On athletes put a lot of miles on a lot of shoes to make the new lighter, faster, and fit better than anything that's come before it. You just saw win the Boston marathon in it, you'll see see me racing in it this fall, what will you race with it?

Haglunds recovery

Phase 1: double surgery (knocked around by doctors)

Phase 2: return to activity (knocked around by my weak, out of shape body and atrophied baby lungs),

Phase 3: return to intensity (knocked around by )

Phase 4: return to racing (knocked around by competitors)

Phase 5: return to form (be the one who knocks)

Phase 4 starts tomorrow with the . No expectations, just go out and remember what it's like to mix it up with the big boys

Finally got my rings, and only a year and half late! Honestly, it's a little bit of outside-in thinking since I'm still getting my ass kicked by paces that need to feel comfortable if I want to add to this tattoo, and that's not fun. But I've been here before and it turned out pretty well

02/06/2023

First time running sub 5 since last April, 7 months post surgery. It has felt so agonizingly slow to get to this point, but it's somehow still a month ahead of where I was when I got the same surgery in 2018. I'm finally hitting consistent 80+ weeks now though, so hopefully the faster stuff will come around quicker now. It better, I'd really hate to break my perfect streak of post-surgery Olympic teams

10/12/2022

Spooky season and I've got all these Monsters in my closet. Started putting together consecutive days of running - I still feel like a trash bag full of jello out there, but progress is progress. Going to be putting some miles on these bad boys soon enough

Photos from Jake Riley's post 08/16/2022

Cast off, blast off baby! 🚀 And by "blast off" I mean 3 x 2 min jog, 2 min walk at 50% body weight. Not too bad for 6 weeks post double surgery. The comeback begins!

07/27/2022

Last stop on the doctors train - PRP injections into the achilles courtesy of . Both surgeries went well, recovery has been really smooth so far, and the break has given me a chance to get my energy levels back up: I didnt realize how low the fire had gotten until it came back. One more week in a boot, then the real work begins.

Haglund's removal, but make it a double!
In addition to the RED-S stuff I've been dealing with, the Haglund's deformity (excess bone growth stimulated by chronic tendinopathy form a bump behind the achilles tendon that causes pain during running and can't be fixed with regular PT) on my left side finally got bad enough I decided to go in for surgery. Some may remember I had that procedure done on the right side back in 2018. Turns out it came back, so I'm having the right side redone as well. (For those dealing with the issue, the first time I got it, they went in arthroscopically, but apparently doctors are now seeing a large number of those surgeries need a second go. Something about higher temps with that method, and not being able to get the gunk from grinding it down out). Anyway, both surgeries went well (look at that beautifully smooth, round heel in pic 4!); I had the second one this morning. They also took out Wellin lesions at the front of both ankles, and did some other stuff too. I'm bummed about how much time I have to take off, but really excited to run without pain (to anyone debating whether to have surgery, my 2 cents: get it, and get it sooner rather than later - in my experience, trying to rehab around a haglund's is a frustrating and ultimately futile process that just wastes time). Also, last time I had this done I made the Olympics, so I'm right on track for 2024.
Thanks Dr Ocel for doing a great cut job, for seeing me through the process, and for sticking by me with I try to rebuild my body. Hope and are ready, because we're going to have some work to do

I think the main reason running becomes such a big part of people's lives is is that you can so clearly see the results of hard work - something like "couch to 5k" isn't just the name of a training plan, it describes a lifestyle change. I think that's an incredibly powerful experience, but you have to have the means, the opportunity, and the security to do it. With its Right to Run social impact program is working with local organizations like and to ensure everyone can run with safety, access, awareness, and inclusion

05/03/2022

at the Olympic athlete induction ceremony they had the athletes that had been to multiple games give the USOPA pin to us first timers, and damn if that didn't melt this old cynic's heart

Bib pic hits different. Everything done but the waiting, see you on Boylston!

Never experienced anything quite like this, the excitement building. Also, drawing and .molly crowds is a new career goal

First time on the course, got some real time thoughts (with his classic expert videography), and in short, I can see why this course favors runners who have raced it a few times. Thanks for bringing me out, 5 weeks to go!

Got out of Boulder just ahead of a snow storm to get some quality training in AZ before on March 5th. I hate to give Arizona compliments, but these are some of the best trails I've ever run. Less than 8 weeks 'til !

Borat jokes are funny again right? Because I'm going to be saying "my wife" A LOT. Luckily she said yes anyway; so happy to spend my life with you

Laughing at just how stacked this field is https://bit.ly/3qlYgoe - if you want to be the best you gotta beat the best, and never disappoints. See you all on Boylston Street

Starting to get the pre-race tingles. Just got off the phone for some last minute advice. His coaching on strength, mobility, life has been a huge part of getting me here, so thanks Kevin

Within 48 hours of the Olympic marathon, and I want to make sure to give credit so the people that helped me get here. Thanks , , and Matt Ferguson (I don't have a picture and he doesn't do social media, but he's in Westminster and he's awesome) for helping me through all the aches and pains that come up during training. One piece of advice to young runners is find a team that can keep you healthy and see them early and often. I've found mine and they're fantastic
