A1 Finland - Europe World Cup

The Lost in Kainuu Adventure Race 2024 will take place in Vuokatti, Sotkamo, Finland, this coming weekend, September 6–7.

This year, more than 170 teams, totaling around 400 adventurers ranging from beginners to top-level adventure athletes, will participate in the race.

The disciplines of Lost in Kainuu include mountain biking, running, trekking, orienteering, water-based tasks, canoeing, and rope tasks.

The competition features four categories: the 24-hour, 235-kilometer Extremely Lost, the 16–18-hour, 175-kilometer Lost, the 6–8-hour, 80-kilometer Almost Lost, and the 3–4-hour, 40-kilometer Casually Lost.

The teams' progress can be followed live via GPS tracking at www.lostinkainuu.fi.

The longest category, the 24-hour Extremely Lost, the Finnish Championship of the Adventure1 series will be decided for the second time, as well as the European stage of the World Cup.
The winning team will be the first to qualify for a free entry to the World Cup final, Sud Raid Adventure Race, in France, August 2025.

Race Director, Jukka Liuha, says that The Free Adventure team, who has won the Lost in Kainuu race multiple times in previous years, will once again compete for the victory. "This year’s race will once again be extremely challenging, so I expect the battle at the top to be quite interesting. The critical points in the 24-hour race will likely be the approximately 22 km long canoeing section and the roughly 130 km section, which takes place in the dark and involves biking and trekking and orienteering through highly varied hill terrain.”

The Casually Lost, Almost Lost, and Lost categories are also open to first-time participants with basic skills in orienteering and swimming who are at least 18 years old and in good physical condition. "Lost in Kainuu offers both memorable nature experiences and the chance to test one’s physical and mental limits," Liuha says. This is the 14th edition of Lost in Kainuu, organized by Kainuun Liikunta.

A1 Paraguay

Paraguay has impressed in its first year as part of A1.

It is no wonder when you look at the experience of the race directors. RD for the next race, La Misión 2024, is Jorge Diaz. Here is some background.

He started participating in adventure races in 2001, in the first race held in Paraguay, and continued competing until 2020 when I decided to take a break. However, during that time, in 2008, decided to move to the next level, which was to become a race organizer. This led to the creation of ARASUNU, a member of the Adventure Runners Club of Paraguay, with a 75 km race (cycling, trekking, kayaking). Since that time, ARASUNU has not taken a single year off, continuously organizing races up to the present day, adding Trail Running events, Ultra Trail races, training courses in cartography and navigation, vertical activity courses (rappelling), and motor events like Enduro.

Jorge has completed;
* 235 adventure races
* 160 Trail Running races
* 11 Ultra Trail races
* Training and education of 635 cartographers and/or navigators
* Training and education of 112 rappellers in vertical activities, leading to the creation of the Zona Vertical group.

La Misión, in the adventure race modality, as part of the events organized by ARASUNU, began in 2017 as an annual event on the Corredores de Aventura Paraguay calendar. It continued in 2018, 2019, and 2020, where we managed to carry it out even during the pandemic. After the pandemic, ARASUNU took a break from adventure races and focused more on promoting Trail Running, a sport we introduced to Paraguay on November 1, 2014, making our organization the pioneer of this sport in the country.

It’s the quality of people like Jorge that help set the standard for A1 in Paraguay and Worldwide.

Thats a wrap for Expedition Alaska Adventure Race.
Once again congratulations to the winners and our 2024 World Cup champions, Team Bones Adventure Racing - Roy Malone, Jason Quinn, Megan Erspamer, Mari Chandler. That’s two wins from two at Alaska for Mari, an amazing achievment. I’m sure she will be back for Edition 3 in 2026. While they led pretty much from start to finish the result was never guaranteed as they were chased hard for four days by Tesm Warrior and the final winning margin was only 2h40m.
This was a brilliantly run event, fitting of a World Cup Final, setting the highest of standards for World Cups to follow. Jeff Leininger and his team at Warrior Races leave no stone unturned and continue to delivery. They really are the best in the business, continuing to break new ground. The ARDotWatch coverage was brilliant with the live broadcasts programs twice a day, incorporating interviews with special guests from around the world, including winner from the infamous edition 1, Rob Preston, who is RD of the upcoming Oceania World Cup, Expedition AR in October.
Now we move to the 2024/25 Eorld Cup Series which will start and finish in Europe with the biggest race in Finland, Lost in Kainuu, in September 2024, and culminating with 2025 World Cup final, Sud Raid Adventure Race, in France.

A1 USA - World Cup Final 2024
Update 2am, 63 hours into Expedition Alaska Adventure Race.

After all three top teams arrived at TA5 around 9pm, it is interesting to see the different strategy.
Team Warrior (2nd place) appears to still be at the TA5, so assuming their tracker is working, this means they have chosen to have a long, final sleep and will then push to finish the rest of the race without sleep and do a lot of the packraft/trek in daylight.
Team Bones (1st Place) were first to start the packraft/trek and will travel through the night and moving in on the second of 6 CP’s on the leg, so it’s slow progress. They seem to have banked periods of sleep during the race but nothing decent, so it will be interesting to see when they sleep again.
Team Thisability (3rd place) are well into the packraft/trek but yet to reach the first CP22. They are ranked behind Team Warrior as they didn’t do the optional bike CP’s.
It’s an intriguing time of the race. Whose strategy will work out best.
