First rule of firearm safety: always point your muzzle in a safe direction....or the alternative wording (which seems more appropriate in this case): never point your muzzle at something you’re not willing to destroy. These pics are just a few of a dozen pellet patterns in a shooting stand at a local public range. I chose to share these (with my daughter in the shooting station) to show how dangerous these negligent discharges were. The fact these marks exist show a clear disregard for the first rule of firearm safety. Things like this are part of the reason I started taking fi****ms training courses and eventually stated my company...I saw a training deficit (first in myself and then in others). Before you set foot in the range, you owe it to the people around you to have a solid understanding of firearm safety. If you don’t have it, sign up for a class and get trained.

This is a prime example of being an innocent victim of an unprovoked crime....until she was no longer in fear for her life. The main reason I love shooting 3 gun is the matches often force you to operate outside of your comfort zone...and lessons learned in those matches dictate future training. This stage is a prime example: on 2/3 ipsc and 10” steel plates at 200 yards, 2 hits from the barricade, then 3 hits each from strong side prone and support side prone. Most people will train from cover or from support side or from prone. But almost no one trains support side prone... and almost certainly not past cqb distances. If you haven’t tried 3 gun, find a match and sign up, you won’t be disappointed.

Shooting from unorthodox positions should be part of your training. If all you’ve ever done is shoot from a comfortable isosceles stance, you’ll be lost in a defensive encounter when you may have to shoot under a car, up a flight a stairs, or when knocked to the ground.

I’ve given similar advice to my students for years. If you’re deciding each day whether to carry your gun or not, Murphy’s law is going to make sure the time you’ll need it is going to be one of the times you talked yourself out of carrying it. Give this topic some thought and make a rule for yourself soon. Always carry...never carry...carry only when _______. Whatever your rule is, stick to it. My rule is simple...anytime I can legally carry, I do.
