Physical activity benefits kids physical AND mental health!

The amount of physical activity children need depends on their age. Children ages 3 through 5 years need to be active throughout the day. Children and adolescents ages 6 through 17 need to be active for 60 minutes every day.

To help meet these guidelines, you can encourage children to participate in activities that are age-appropriate, enjoyable, and offer variety.

It may be windy💨 outside... but at least we have some sun! 🌞

Green spaces, such as Port Gamble Forest Heritage Park, have also been shown to have a beneficial effect on youth's mental health!
One 2020 study noted that access and exposure to green space had a beneficial association including: "reduced stress, positive mood, less depressive symptoms, better emotional well-being, improved mental health and behavior, and decreased psychological distress".

So if you have the chance today, pack a good windbreaker (and your teen if you have one of those too!😉) and enjoy the physical and mental benefits of being outdoors!

"Roughly half of all people in the United States will be diagnosed with a mental health disorder at some point in their lifetime... The good news is that even small amounts of physical activity can immediately reduce symptoms of anxiety in adults and older adults. Depression has also shown to be responsive to physical activity. Research suggests that increased physical activity, of any kind, can improve depression symptoms experienced by people across the lifespan. Engaging in regular physical activity has also been shown to reduce the risk of developing depression in children and adults" - Paul Reed, MD - Director, Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion

**Check out this post from about ! A great reminder that physical activity can be healthy for you AND for the earth 🌎💚💙 💚💙🌎**

Hop on a bike and help the environment! Nearly 50% of car trips are less than 3 miles long - the perfect distance for a great bike trip.

So this May in honor of Cascade Bike Club's Bike Everywhere Month, city officials are challenging Islanders to rethink their commutes.

Start by replacing just one car trip to reduce your climate impact and enjoy the double benefit of improving your overall physical health, too.

You can also earn points in the Climate Smart Challenge by taking a bike ride this month!

Prompts to Encourage Physical Activity 05/12/2022

The adage is true — old habits ARE hard to break. And for most people, riding the elevator is an old habit. Some people even forget that there are stairs! Posting motivational signs at places where people have a choice between the stairs and elevator is an important aspect of encouraging people to use the stairs.

Be sure to share with us any signs you see out while out and about during Month!

Congrats, Josh Farley, for the awesome turn-out last weekend for your Loop Around Kitsap Lake!

Be sure to keep a look out...🔍 We'll be posting details about the next Kitsap Sun Story Walk (and scavenger hunt) happening in Kingston this Saturday!

Kitsap Lake, carved by the glaciers in the Pleistocene, became a depot between Bremerton, Seabeck and Silverdale. Al Clark's service station (born 1936) is now home to Juan’s Taqueria.

Disability 👏Is 👏Not 👏Inability!

When it comes to physical activity, we all can play a part in supporting equitable and inclusive access.
In 2019, 13% of all Kitsap residents were disabled (compared to 12.7% in WA State), and from 2016-2020, 33.2% of all residents 65+ were disabled.
It’s important to remember that statistics are more than just numbers. They represent are our neighbors, classmates, friends, and family members, and ALL have a valued place within our active community.
We’ll be talking about many ways we can support access to physical activity during this month that start from the basis of equitable and inclusive access.
