Parenting Sweet
Community parenting resource and support serving northeast TN and southwest VA.
Learn more about positive discipline in our Attached at the Heart Parenting Program - visit www.ParentingSweet.org for details.
Guiding our children for growth helps them to form an inner compass that guides them to make good decisions when we aren’t around.
Positive discipline includes age-appropriate boundaries, routines, rules, and conversations that help our children learn from experience and practice.
Fear-based punishment shuts down learning, so children may indeed learn what to avoid, but they won't learn the right action instead.
Mistakes are a part of learning and so is repetition. Sometimes, this means that mistakes are repeated and our role is to respond with understanding and help children make the course corrections to do better. This is how all learning happens.
Using an empathetic, loving approach to understanding your child’s learning tasks, temperament, and capabilities allows us to strengthen our connections with our children.

Sometimes, I’ll see a mom with her toddler and it will hit me... it’s not that I don’t love where my kids are in life. It’s not that I’m longing for the past. But, oh, how I’d love to feel some things just one more time...

Taking deep breaths in a hectic moment or taking a body break, like massaging your face, can model ways to stay calm. Over time, your child will learn to do it too.

Choose wisely the words you say to your children, to others, to yourself. Words have a way of becoming truths we believe about ourselves. And what we believe, we become.

The MLK Jr Day new schedule has been announced. Most of the events will be Saturday Feb 3, and the main speaker is now scheduled for 4pm on Sunday Feb 4 - which should let most people attend without missing their own church evening service.
When my child acts out, I know that it’s because she lacks some skills needed for the situation. When I can patiently model those skills for her over time, it helps her learn to tolerate frustration, problem-solve, and become more flexible.
