Today, the City of Brockton is proud to announce the nomination of Greg Fernandes as the Citizen Spotlight for this week!

Mr. Fernandes is a Brocktonian who is deeply committed to music and spreading that love to the youth of the City of Champions. He is a recent author and a retired music teacher.

Greg has always believed that there has been a serious need for children in Brockton to have a safe space. Somewhere they can leave their problems at the door, and instead learn music and art, while also creating meaningful friendships and connections.

This strong belief led Greg to create the “Rose Conservatory,” which is an after-school music program for youth that runs Monday-Friday from 3 pm - 7 pm. The Conservatory has a contract with Brockton Public Schools to pick up children from their school upon dismissal and deliver them directly to the program.

The Rose Conservatory currently has a small focus group of 2nd and 3rd grade students but the hope is to expand to 4th and 5th grade by next year and eventually, offer this opportunity to children of all ages.

Please see the list of upcoming Rose Conservatory events:

1. The Rose Conservatory will be performing at City Hall at the Community Holiday Celebration on November 27th from 11am to 11:30am.

2. Rose Conservatory will be performing (singing and drumming) at Bridgewater State University's Gala Holiday Extravaganza Concert on December 10 from 7-9pm.
RC students will perform alone and join the BSU Chorale, Wind Ensemble, Chamber Singers, Jazz Band and student soloists, singing all the holiday favorites.

3. Rose Conservatory is hosting the 2nd Annual "Drive Thru Toy Giveaway" at North Middle School on December 17th from 5-8:00pm. Last year the Conservatory gave away over 400 gifts to families from all over Brockton.

4. Rose Conservatory will host its own Holiday concert @ Rose Conservatory on December 23 starting at 5:30pm. It will be an amazing evening of singing and West African drumming.

Rose Conservatory was founded to honor the life and legacy of Greg's mother, Roseanna.

Roseanna was a gifted music teacher who touched the lives of many children, and Greg will continue her mission by bringing the joy of music to the Brockton area and creating a sanctuary where children can learn, play, and grow.
