The visit was designed to prepare students for poetry month coming in April and culminating in our first School 6 Poetry Slam! Students were treated to several poems being read aloud by librarian Juana Flores and had the opportunity to browse many poetry books specially selected for them. Ms. Flores spoke to students about similes and metaphors and gave some great tips for preparing for the poetry slam. Stay tuned for more information about our Poetry Slam in the coming weeks!

On Saturday, March 16th Adult Education School 6, led by Jessica Griffith, partnered with Seeds in the Middle to bring a Day of Wellness to our adult ed students! Students were treated to a cooking demonstration and tasting by Chef Lature. His raw, vegan purple cabbage tacos were a huge hit! "It was delicious!" said student Maria Gonzalez. Students were also able to try freshly squeezed juices prepared by some of their ESL classmates and a vegetable soup prepared with produce from the farmer's market onsite. Once students tasted the foods, they were able to select free produce from the farmers market to cook with at home. Students were also able to visit the School 6 Free Store where many were able to get shoes, clothes, books and housewares. Before leaving the event, students stopped by our Meditation and Mindfulness room where they learned valuable techniques for reducing stress with Case Manager Tamara Julien. Special thanks to all who attended and supported making this a successful event!

Holiday Caroling!!! The Adult ESL class at CIA enthusiastically performed Jingle Bells for the staff and GED class. The performance was a culmination of two weeks for preparation that consisted of: learning the lyrics and definition of words, practicing pronunciation and enunciation, and supporting autonomy by having them make all the decisions regarding their performance.
These important experiences provide our students opportunities to gain insights into the American/New York culture, gain confidence with their English skills - not just speaking, but singing in English and, finally, feeling a part of their new hometown...New York.
